Driver Override System- Is It Needed In cars?

With the advancement of automotive technology, vehicles actively make there decision if the driver fails to apply breaks

at time of collision.

The rapid increase of sensor technology helps the vehicle to make firm decisions when the driver fails to take any action

manually.

It's used as the electronic fail-safe and a fully integrated electronic system. When the car's onboard computer system detects any abnormal mismatch in the operation of brake pedal and the accelerator, it sends signal to stop

the vehicle safely irrespective of the user's command.

The system is designed for cars with electronic throttle control, software and wires that connect the gas pedal and engine to

ECU.

As per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the road would be more safer if this technology installed in all vehicle

types.

As per safety officials, if the application becomes a permanent part of vehicles then it could avoid many uncertain crashes on

road.

The application helps the vehicle user to feel confident that they can easily get the vehicle in control if any abnormal situation

happens.

As per studies, the application also gives the ability to step on the break if the system malfunctions at any point.

How Driver Override System Works?

The override system is a fully integrated electric system that works with the sensors on the vehicle.

The sensors transmit the signals to ECU and ECU checks the positions of brake pedal, accelerator to detect any problem.

If any abnormal conditions found, then the ECU either override the problem or reduce its effect on vehicle.

In some vehicles, the accelerator commands get overruled by the vehicle to minimize the issue.

In some vehicles, the system reduces the engine's fuel supply and in hybrid it reduces the electronic current force.

When vehicle ECU senses an

unintentional acceleration from different reasons

like:-

:- if the accelerator pedal keeps on pressed without driver consent.

:- If the break pedal and accelerator pedal pushed accidentally.

:- If electrical malfunction happens where the driver is unaware of it.

:- If the vehicle has brake problem then the driver must stop the vehicle slowly and make it fixed.

Benefits of driver override system:-

:- The system increases safety whether the situation is human error or system error.

:- As many vehicles have electronic throttle, the system immediately gives a signal to the ECU to reduce the high-speed

for avoiding the crash.

By 2020, there will be an evolution where cars will apply breaks whether the driver is aware or not, when the system sense any

problem with driver's intent.
