StorageThe Frunk"The Frunk (front trunk)for single motor versions of the Model S, there a microwave area that provides additional storagefloor dimensions are 22L by 38W (approx)Microwave 16L x 20W x 12H

At the end of the first part of this EVU mini-course, we were discussing the frunk and trunk, both interior storage features of the Tesla Model S.

Before we leave the topic, it might be worthwhile to give you some baseline dimensions for these two storage locations. Recognize that both the trunk and trunk are irregular shapes, so the dimensions are at best approximate:

>> The Frunk or front trunk, tends to be used a bit less than the trunk, probably because years of conditioning causes us not to think of the volume under the hood as storage space. But it is! And it can be very useful. As I mentioned in part 1, theres enough volume in the Frunk to store 2 small suitcases, 1 or 2 travel bags, or a few tools or other items.

>> for single motor versions of the Model S, there a microwave area that provides additional storage>> The Frunkss floor dimensions are approximately 22 by 38 inches.>> The microwave space encompasses a volume of 16 x 20 x 12 inches. The frunk area for the dual motor Model S is shown in the upper right image on your screen. The lower left image shows the frunk with the microwave for the single motor Model S

>> In part 1, I mentioned that the Trunk provides more storage than some SUVs>> it has rear fold down seats with a hatchback and provides significant storage volume>> with the seats folded down, the storage area is 72L by 38W (minimum)>> with rear sets in place, storage area 45L by 38W (minimum)>> a optional storage shelf hides the contents of the trunk and can be used for small and light items.

RegenStrength settingstandard is recommendedBecomes second nature in less than 2 -3 weeks

Regen is a feature that is unique to almost all EVs, and the Tesla Model S has done an excellent job of executing regen. For those who have not taken the EV Curriculum Track at EVU, regen, short for regenerative braking, captures the energy of forward motion of the car when your foot is released from the accelerator, and converts it into electrical energyin essence, recharging the battery. As the kinetic energy is converted into electricity, the car slows. Therefore, regen can be used braking as a mechanism.

What this means is that you can brake the Model S without using the brake petal and you will.

>> The strength of regen for the Model S can be set to either standard or low.>> standard is recommendedAs an aside, regen does feel odd for first-time EV drivers, but>> it becomes second nature in less than 2 -3 weeks and after a few months, driving a car without regen feels odd and somewhat unnatural

ChargingUnlike most other EVs, the charger is part of the Model Sthat means no external EVSETesla-specific charging cable and connector240V - 40 amp circuit in garage is strongly recommended (NEMA 14-50)Fully digital controlscharge time, power setting, standard or range charges

>> Unlike most other EVs, the charger is part of the Model S, and>> that means no external EVSEelectric vehicle service equipment>> a Tesla-specific charging cable and connector come standard with the Model S>> a 240V - 40 amp circuit referred to as a NEMA 14-50 in your garage is strongly recommendedCharging is initiated simply by connected the charging cable and connecter to the Model S, but>> a set of fully digital controlsenables you to set>> charge time, power setting, and standard or range charges

Battery* Tesla discontinued the 60kWh battery and replaced it with a 70kWh version. Audio has not been updated for this slide.

At the end of the day, the Tesla Model S battery is the single component that makes the Model S the king of EVs. It enables long range and high performancethe characteristics that distinguish the Model S from other EVs>> either 60 kWh or 85 kWh batteries can be selectedThe 85kWh battery contains>> 7,104 lithium-ion cells, >> organized into groups of 74 cells, 1 battery module = 6 groups>> 16 modules are wired in series and comprise the battery pack of the car

>> the Model S battery is guaranteed for 8 yrs or 125,000 miles (60kWh) or unlimited miles (85kWh)

>> its skateboard design enables>> easy removal or swapping>> and its weight lowers the center of gravity of the car, leading to better braking and cornering characteristics.

Autopilot - IBeginning in September, 2014, all new Model S vehicles are equipped with a windshield mounted cameraforward looking radarultrasonic sonar sensors in the front and rear bumpers

Modern premium automobiles provide a wide array of sensors and computer-based systems that provide significant driver assist and improve driving safety significantly. Model S introduced these features at the end of its second year in the market.>> Beginning in September, 2014, all new Model S vehicles can be equipped with >> a windshield mounted camera>> forward looking radar>> ultrasonic sonar sensors in the front and rear bumpers

Autopilot - IIthese sensors provide a 360-degree sensing zone allow the Model S electronics to detect road signs, lane indicators, obstacles in the road, and other vehicles moving through the sensing zoneprovides adaptive cruise control and lane departure warnings"Tech Package" option enables semi-autonomous driving and parking capabilities

>> these sensors provide a 360-degree sensing zone, which when coupled with appropriate computer-based safety systems, >> allow the Model S electronics to detect road signs, lane indicators, obstacles in the road, and other vehicles moving through the sensing zone>> they also provide adaptive cruise control and lane departure warnings>> An optional "Tech Package" enables semi-autonomous driving and parking capabilities with the potential for autonomous driving in the future. There are dozens and dozens of additional features and functions delivered by the Model S, and as you take other EVU mini-courses in the Model S curriculum track, youll learn more about some of them.
