Tyre Pressure MonitoringCost and Usability Aspects for Commercial Vehicles

Correct tyre pressure provides four benefits!Incorrect tyre pressure increases your operatingcost and can be dangerous, too.With too little air in your tyres you will face exces-sive wear and in the end there is the risk of a breakdown. At the same time, overinflated tyres and ex-cessive load will also reduct your mileage.The diagram on the right clearly shows:20% too much load or 20% too little pressure willincrease tyre wear by around 20%, i.e. you are onlyusing 80% of maximum possible mileage.

The impact on fuel consumption is just as serious.Studies by Shell, VDA, Wabco et. al. are agreeing on 2,5% higher fuel con-sumption at 20% below rated pressure. This percentage increases up to 8%for lower pressures.

The third aspect is maintenance cost: Thorough tyre maintenance costs time: ca. 60 - 90 seconds per wheel andcosts are repeating typically once a week. With labor costs of 15 - 20 Euro perhour, your yearly total per vehicle accumulates ca. 750 Euro.

Finally there is the cost for neglected maintenance which will lead to more fre-quent tyre failures than with regular maintenance or with monitored tyres.These tyre failures are very costly when they occur. Costs of 1500 Euro perevent are common; and in many cases there will be additional costs for thedowntime of the vehicle plus penalties for failing to meet delivery commit-ments.

With a tyre pressure monitoring system all four aspects will be improved:The tyre pressures are permanently monitored and (via a telematics system) itcan be added as a parameter to the cost accounting; this adds another impor-tant variable to your calculations and MIS.The result: improved competitiveness in an ever narrower market and an im-proved bottom line without much effort.Typical ROI is achieved after only 6 - 9 months.The acquisition cost for TireMoni Truck TPMS can be subsidized under the De-Minimis Program (Germany) as safety equipment; this reduces your ROI byanother very large factor.

LED Pressure AlarmOptical-electronic tyre pressure monitoring sensors

The valve cap warns with a red flashing lightwhen the pressure in your tyre is too low.LED pressure alarm is a strong tool to preventflat tyres and to reduce operating costs (fuelconsumption, tyre wear); at the same time dri-ving safety is improved considerably.The sensor is installed on the valve in place ofthe valve cap; during installation it automati-cally calibrates to the pressure present in thetyre and monitors it permanently.

If the pressure drops by more than 0,5 Bar, thesensor warns by a red flashing light. The LED is clearly visible for 20 m even in daylight. Pressure variations as a result of temperaturechanges are automatically compensated - nofalse warnings. Anti theft protection is includedin the design.

Structure and function of the systemThe system consists of two parts:1) Sensorbox (ECU) with 4 sensors is installed at the rear end of the vehicle

attached to the vehicle electrical. Data transmission is done via the vehiclewire harness (“+”- line). No signal wirings are required!
