Cascade Chapter of IAP2 USA2014 Public Involvement Best Practice Awards

Official Entry Form

The Cascade Chapter of the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2 USA) is pleased to bring back the “Public Involvement Best Practice Awards” program as a part of the 2014 PI Works! conference in Bend, OR.

What is this award?The PI Best Practice Awards recognize projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington that promote meaningful and innovative opportunities for community engagement. The IAP2 Core Values provide the basis for evaluating award nominations. Not all of the Core Values need apply, but the proposer should demonstrate which of the Core Values are applicable and why.

There are two categories: Public Involvement Project of the Year – Best Planning Project Public Involvement Project of the Year – Best Capital Project

Only one entry per category will be accepted.

Who can apply?Award nominations are open to anyone engaged in public involvement work (public involvement practitioners, project managers, agency staff, etc.), both public and private.

What kind of project is applicable?Projects must be in the public realm (planning, construction or policy making) and must have been substantially completed after January 2012 and before March. 2014.

Is there a fee to apply?There is a $30 application fee per entry. Checks should be made payable to: Cascade Chapter of IAP2 and included with the official entry form and submission.

Format Entries in all award categories are required to use the following guidelines:

o Complete the Cover Pageo Entries must be no longer than four, double-sided, 8 ½ in x 11 in pages (eight pages

total). o Including project photos, graphics or web links is encouraged.o Number pages and note the project sponsor and title in a header or footer.

Page 2 will be the Case Study Summary table using the following format and headings. The purpose of this summary is to provide an executive summary of the award submission. The total word count should not exceed 250 words, and it should fit on a single letter-size page (8 ½” x 11”) sheet with consistent 1” margins on all sides.

The Problem and ChallengeDescribe the problem and challenge faced.

The Role of Public InvolvementBriefly describe the role of public involvement in addressing the problem or challenge.

Public Involvement MethodsDescribe the methods, techniques and tools used to engage the public and stakeholders.

Uniqueness of the ProjectDescribe what makes this project special. Some questions to consider in this section may include: In what way(s) did public involvement improve the decision? How did public involvement contribute to the resolution of the problem? Describe the innovative involvement techniques that were used. Did the project solve a problem that faces the field of public involvement? How did the project spread the practice of public involvement into a new area? How did the project reach new audiences?

Project ResultsDescribe the project's effectiveness in achieving results. Provide a brief summary of the project evaluation.Organizing Group Alignment with IAP2 Core ValuesDescribe how the IAP2 core values are reflected in the project outcomes. Specifically:

How did the project ensure that those most affected by the decision or problem were involved?

How was the outcome of the project influenced by the public’s contributions? How did the project promote sustainable decisions and ensure that the needs and

interests of all participants were communicated? How did the project seek out and facilitate the involvement of those most affected? How did the project seek input from participants on how they wished to participate? How did the information provided to participants support or contribute to meaningful

participation? How did the communication of the project results ensure that participants knew how their

input affected the decision or addressed the problem?
