3 Simple Ways To Take 2016's Blogs & Make 2017's Money

Bloggers write stories. We write A LOT of stories.

All of those stories have value, but many bloggers write their post, share it afew times on social media, and then they leave it to die a slow death in the"archives" section of their blogs. And then when they need content for a newplatform like Periscope or Facebook Live or they find a new audience onSnapchat or Pinterest, they are looking to create for them instead ofREcreate.

While it is always important to have new content that speaks to the day'sinterests, we can't forget what we have already done. This is the foundationof working smarter not harder in the blogging world.

The extreme of this? I've plagiarized myself on a number of occasions. I callthe posts my signature content. :-) But I've done the content on differentsites and I've created videos of it, too.

So how can you create some signature pieces across platforms and make alittle - hopefully a lot - of money from your old blog posts? Here are a few ofmy money makers.Live streaming: With Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Periscope andother ways to pop up in your audience's days, taking old posts to theairwaves is crazy easy - and lucrative. Using live streaming helps bring you awider audience and brand recognition so people will stream into your blogmore often. Whether you set up your blog for outside advertising, sponsorships, affiliate links or you sell your own products, more eyes on yourblog will eventually bring you more money.

BONUS: If you create products, a great way to do LIVE commercials forthem is via live streaming. You can then later use that video content as yourFacebook ad or strip the audio from it and run it as a podcast.

Bonus bonus: A "podcast" doesn't have to be a regular show. You candownload to a podcast whenever you want.

Speaking: Many bloggers are becoming influencers; the weight of theirviewpoints is becoming a force in their circles. Due to this shift, we are beingasked to speak at conferences. If you've never spoken before, then you maynot know what to say. Use a blog post. Taking what you've already createdand fashioning a speech does a few things. It gives you an easy win sinceyou'll be much less nervous presenting on a topic you already know. Itmakes you an expert. The more times you say something the more peoplebelieve you know what you are saying. It gives you some crosspostability(yes, I'm making up words). In a nutshell, when you are on stage you cantell the audience to reference your site, you can tweet the blog content priorto the event so people will be able to ask questions; important if you want totailor your speech to what they NEED or EXPECT to learn from you. You canalso break the post up and create slides. BONUS: You'll have pictures/visuals since they were already created in yourpost!

Events: This is huge. You have to create your own stage to be a majorplayer in any space. Events are a way to do that. However, how do youstart? Where do you begin? Your blog posts can be the catalyst for an eventyou host. This could be a room of ten people or 10,000. It really

doesn't matter. Your audience can be found in your blog posts with theshares, comments, opens, etc.

There's always more than one way to tell a story and there is definitely morethan one way to reach an audience.

In August of 2013 I was scrambling. I’d lost my blogging job and needed toreplace that income before September of 2013 (you know how that goes). So I decided to start a class to teach other bloggers what I knew aboutblogging. There were charts, slides, and I had screenshots, stories, bigboards of Post-It notes with everything I knew. I got my Google Docpresentation together and set out on Learning Annex and Eventbrite. I evenreached out to my network to promote. Crickets.

Nobody was buying what I was selling. However, there was a call for writersfor Blogalicious. They wanted eguides written for bloggers. I had all of thiscourse material at my disposal. Having never written an eguide, I stillpitched them one of my ideas from the class.

Boom. The “no” of the masses instantly turned into an amazing “Yes”. Thatno resulted in me having the highest viewed eguide in the BeBlogaliciousstore. I could have sat in my home office and believed that, since no one wasbuying, the material had no value. Yet I didn’t give up.

Do you have a project, speech, book, class, podcast, blog or blog post justsitting on the shelf because you’ve heard “no” over and over? Well, here’s afew ways to turn the “no” into a “yes”.

3 Simple Ways To Take 2016's Blogs & Make 2017's Money

1. Ask someone. I had the good fortune of having a network of peopletelling me that the class was valuable. I also had the good fortune of nothaving some of my emails answered when I was trying to market the class.Several people who are mentors in my head didn’t say anything to me andthat said a lot. There are plenty of times when I didn’t know what to say to acolleague who didn’t quite have their materials ready for market. If you can’tget your friends excited, then people you don’t know won’t get excited either.

2. Reevaluate. Maybe you’ve chosen the wrong market, or platform for yourproduct or service. What I have to say about blogging is valuable, but myaudience didn’t want to sit through webinars to hear the information ormaybe they didn’t want to hear it from me. Blogalicious is for bloggers andpeople who love learning about blogs. Bloggers didn’t need hand holding (theclass), but wanted a quick read with action steps.

Try a one-question survey with your audience to find out what they wantfrom you. Ask them, “What do you want from me?” Give them the optionsyou can produce – book, audio book, ebook, speeches, retreats, high-levelaccess to you with a members only website, one-on-one coaching, etc. This isyour starting point.

3. Marry the info not the packaging. If you are a world-class speaker onphysics, but no one wants to hear you talk about your new love of chess, youmay have to give up on talking about chess. However, what if you started ablog, a podcast, or even a fan site for The Big Bang Theory (where they lovechess and physics)? You might not make the same money you do as aspeaker, but you have a chance for monetization and sharing your passion.

4. Give up control. This one is hard. As entrepreneurs we eat what wekill. Period. When we hand over our projects to someone else to help us “killit” we then are giving over the profits, some of the pomp and circumstance, and lending our reputation to the other entity. Blogalicious actually owns myeguide. Honestly the “what ifs” have crossed my mind, but the conveyanceof their reputation to my brand is invaluable. Oftentimes that gift works bothways.

5. Wait. This one is hard, but it works. Sometimes the world just isn’t readyfor your business ideas or you haven’t found the right home/audience/buyersfor what you are trying to sell. As an entrepreneur that is a hard reality, andone of the main reasons we need to have multiple revenue streams. Iknow I didn’t have long to wait for the Blogalicious opportunity, but as soonas I heard it I knew it was right for what I had in front of me. Like they say,you don’t have to get ready if you stay ready.

Here’s to more yeses than noes and noes that turn into yeses in 2017.
