Future Trends of Building Envelope system

ENVELOPE SYSTEMS WITH THERMAL BREAK

A thermal break is also a load-bearing thermal insulation system used in reinforced concrete structures to form a thermal break between cantilever structures and internal floor.

Insulated glazing – the air or gas between the panes stops the conductive thermal energy from passing through the glass.

Metal window or curtain wall framing –a separator material is used between the inner and outer frames to prevent the temperature transfer through the frame and condensation on the inside frame.

Concrete work – a single row of concrete masonry units (CMU block) is commonly set between the inner concrete slab and Exterior concrete work, to prevent the transfer of heat or cold through the slab.

Metal and wood framed buildings - an insulation material installed on the roof, walls and floor prevents thermal Short circuit creating the heat transfer through the framing material and controls when desired (winter/summer) Resulting in energy savings

Metal windows and doors - separating the frame into two separate interior and exterior pieces joined with a less conductive material reduces temperature transfer.

Thermal breaks (made of substantially rigid, low thermal conductive polyurethane which is mechanically locked in aluminium window framing can be more than a thousand times less conductive than aluminium and a hundred times less than steel.

Windows and doors - separating the frame into 2 separate interior and exterior pieces joined with a less conductive material between reduces temperature transfer. In addition thermal breaks can have the added benefit of reducing sound transmittance by dampening vibration

Warm Edge Spacers Warm Edge Technology is a term given to a slightly different type of spacer bar, the term warm edge is

based on the fact that the construction is fabricated and designed to conduct less heat or cold than the traditional spacer tube used in standard sealed units.

Traditional standard sealed units are manufactured using an aluminium edge which holds the two glass panes apart at a predefined gap, as aluminium efficiently conducts heat or cold this can lead to higher levels of thermal loss, and a reduction of energy efficiency. Up to 80% of the energy in a standard glass unit can be lost at the unit's edge.

For comparison purposes double glazed sealed units fabricated using a warm edge spacer bar can have a warmer internal edge temperature of up to 65%, reducing the risk of condensation by up to 70% and increasing thermal efficiency.

The reduction in moisture achieved by using a warm edge on your sealed unit reduces the chance of mould growth and other potentially harmful bacteria, and can be an important consideration for those that suffer from respiratory conditions such as asthma.

End User Benefits : Reduces energy bills through less heat loss. Reduces condensation inside when compared to standard units. Minimal frame damage from fungus. Helps improved indoor climate. 4F Ultra ® is a warm edge spacer bar solution designed to meet or exceed the specifications required

in the manufacture of energy rated sealed units. The unique combination of stainless steel outer with plastic top allows the unit corners to be formed in a bender. While the plastic is flexible the stainless steel remains rigid, it gives excellent corners and straight sides on the frames while offering a low thermal transmittance.

Corner connection is achieved by utilising bespoke push-fit corner keys, and the use of Staple fittings ensures no cracking. 4fTherbar is available with or without a unique gas barrier tape specifically designed to accommodate sealed units that contain a filler element.

The Super Spacer referred to as warm edge technology, has little or no effect on the centre of glass U value or insulation, often referred to in the specification of double glazed units.

Super Spacer incorporates a drying agent which absorbs any moisture present in the air or gas in the cavity between the glass. The structural foam nature of the extrusion also enables shaped units, particularly circular shapes to be manufactured, without the use of the bending process necessary for aluminium spacer.

Every window is a thermal bridge and it is important to select materials with less conductivity. The construction of 4F Double Glazed Units with Super Spacer ensures that there is no cold perimeter bridge and has little or no effect on the centre of pane U values or insulation properties of 4F Double Glazed Units. However the perimeter insulation value can be affected by the perimeter conductivity of window frame materials particularly metal or aluminium with a thermal conduction rate of 0.4 w/mk. One of the best window frame materials with a very low thermal conductive rate is timber, around 0.16. For this reason Super Spacer edge technology is now becoming more extensively

used in the UK manufacture of Double Glazed Units and has the important effect of ensuring that there is no significant temperature differential from centre to edge of unit. It is generally accepted that warm edge spacer when used in 4FTBSYS construction will ensure that the difference in insulation between the centre and edge of the unit is almost nil.

What are energy ratings?

WER-Window Energy Ratings are designed to offer a guide as to the energy performance of a given component or collection of components within a window system.

The British Fenestration Ratings Council or (BFRC) operate the window energy rating scheme, and it is designed to check all the components to ensure the final window achieves the energy efficiency standard claimed.

India is shortly expected to have a rating system.

Special WER Simulations are carried out in order to produce a component within the grading system, The grades range from A-G, with A being the best energy efficient performer and G the worst energy efficient performance. When these components are combined within another WER Simulation an overall energy rating can be achieved. While this system it is intended to offer a simple consumer guide to the energy efficiency of a window it is important to remember that each component must be of a similar rating in order to achieve the overall result. As an example, if your window's sealed units carry an 'A' rating for their energy performance, and these units are placed into a frame of very low performance say 'E' rated, it is not possible for the final installation to be 'A' Rated. To ensure an 'A' Rating the components in the entire system should be of similar rating values, and a WER simulation run to obtain the ever all rating. Here at 4Ftbsys, we can supply different rated sealed units to match those required for your installation, and each unit we manufacture is given an appropriate rating sticker for your information.*(subject to conditions) As of 2010 Building Regulations (in UK)Part 'L' require all new homes, and domestic replacement

windows to have a minimum 'C' or above Window Energy Rating (WER).

Exceed the minimum... 4Ftbsys are a registered firm. We can not only provide energy rated double and triple glazed sealed units to the minimum C rating, but using our Partner products can provide A rated units

helping to further protect the environment and your pocket. Why settle for the minimum?

when you can supply the max.

Insulating glass units, or double-glazed units, are one of the most common types of glass used today for building applications. Patented as far back as 1865, IG units were implemented in architectural applications after the World War II. Due to their excellent thermal and acoustic properties, they have almost completely replaced basic monolithic windows.

Warm edge vs. Aluminum spacers

Over the decades IGU’s thermal performance has been upgraded with the introduction of low-emission coatings and gases with a low thermal conductivity. Attention was then turned to the edges to further reduce thermal losses caused by highly conductive material. Today the most common type of IG unit is composed of two pieces of glass and a hollow aluminium spacer around the edge of insulating glass. The hollow spacer contains a moister-removing desiccant agent. The major benefits of aluminium pacers are: lightweight, durability and relatively low cost. The dawn back of this spacer is aluminium conductive properties, which sometimes cause that the edges of the glass could lose more heat than the center of the glass.

To overcome this limitation, the glass industry developed so-called low-conducting spacers or warm-edge spacers. These are designed to improve the thermal performance of the windows, reduce condensation, and with the appropriate machinery, permit faster and easier assembly of insulating glass units. When new discussions were held regarding energy-saving legislation in Europe in 1997, interest in low-conductive spacers increased. There are several low-conductive spacers on the market today, however due to the cost factor the classical aluminium spacer still remains the number one choice for IG applications which will soon be replaced by Warm Edge Spacers

The following information is an example of energy and cost savings

Heating Season Savings

In climates with a significant heating season, windows have represented a major source of unwanted heat loss, discomfort, and condensation problems. In recent decades, windows have undergone a technological revolution. It is now possible to have lower heat loss, less air leakage, and warmer window surfaces that improve comfort and minimize condensation. The graphs below illustrate the simulated savings in heating season costs associated with energy efficient windows for a typical house in a heating-dominated climate. The savings shown do not include possible savings from reduced air leakage. Depending on the condition of the old windows in an existing home, the savings can be higher if window replacement leads to long-term air leakage reduction.

Cooling Season Savings

In climates that mainly require cooling, windows have represented a major source of unwanted heat gain. In recent years, low-E coatings that reject solar heat without darkening the glass have undergone a technological revolution. It is now possible to significantly reduce solar heat gain and improve comfort while providing clear views and daylight. The graph below illustrates the simulated savings in cooling season costs associated with improved windows for a house in a cooling-dominated climate. The savings shown do not include possible savings from reduced air leakage. Depending on the condition of the old windows in an existing home, the savings can be higher if

window replacement leads to long-term air leakage reduction.

• Low-e Glasses for BES and their benefits

It's been two decades now since low-e was first introduced to the market. Nobody questions its excellent thermal performance; yet insulating glass with low-e coating is rarely used in construction. 4FTBSYS would like to remind you about the benefits and the cost savings achieved by using low-e glass

During the energy crisis of the 1970's the whole world was determined to reduce the natural resource consumption. The major problem in case of glass was the significant heat loss through the glazing surface. The consequence was a lot of wasted energy and money. In 1980 the commercial development of thin, transparent, low emissive coatings literally revolutionized the concept of energy savings in windows. The low-e coating, placed on the inside of the insulating glass unit, enables the sun's short-wave energy to enter the room and at the same time prevents internal warm air from leaving the room. To know more about the benefits, energy and money savings please contact our representative immediately. We would be very happy to support.

Solar Power : Clean Power We have been using solar energy for various application viz., heating, cooking, etc 4ftbsys is among the first

in India to think of solar Façade application .

Photo voltaics (PV) use solar cells to convert the sun’s energy into electricity. When sunlight hits the semiconductors (solids, such as silicon, that conduct (electricity) in the solar cells, an electrical charge is generated. The different types of PV include: Mounted PV: panels that are mounted on the roof or walls of a building or on the ground. Building-integrated photo voltaic BIPV) are photovoltaic materials that are used to replace conventional building materials in parts of the building envelope such as the roof, skylights, or facades. They are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of new buildings as a principal or ancillary source of electrical power, although existing buildings may be retrofitted with similar technology. The advantage of integrated photo voltaic over more common non-integrated systems is that the initial cost can be offset by reducing the amount spent on building materials and labour that would normally be used to construct the part of the building that the BIPV modules replace. These advantages make BIPV one of the fastest growing segments of the photovoltaic industry. The term building-applied photo voltaics BAPV) is sometimes used to refer to photo voltaic that are a retrofit - integrated into the building after construction is complete. Most building-integrated installations are actually BAPV. Some manufacturers and builders differentiate new construction BIPV from BAPV.

Building Integrated PV (BIPV): light, flexible, thin sheets of PV that are laid over a thermoplastic roof. Thin film PV is cheaper but less productive than mounted PV. Tiles: Some manufactures tiles that can be integrated into a roof and look like traditional roofing tiles. Lamps & Bus Shelters: Street lamps and bus shelter lights run by solar panels are another option for solar installations.

Costs : Solar facade/Roof top

Costs vary for PV systems, but in general, flat roof mounted PV costs about Rs 75-80/kWh over a 20 year time period (this includes rebates but not the selling of RECs).Generator’s greenhouse gas inventory, and the building cannot claim to be “green powered.” However, selling RECs can make project finances much more attractive. One option is the Mass Energy Renewable Energy Certificate Incentive which purchases PV RECs for Rs 18/kWh. (approx. may change as per state's Solar policy)

Latest Trends Double Skin Systems:- The Double-skin facade is a system of building consisting of two skins placed

in such a way that air flows in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of the cavity can be natural, fan supported or mechanical. Apart from the type of the ventilation inside the cavity, the origin and destination of the air can differ depending mostly on climatic conditions, the use, the location, the occupational hours of the building and the HVAC strategy. The glass skins can be single or double glazing units with a distance from 20 cm up to 2 meters. Often, for protection and heat extraction reasons during the cooling period, solar shading Devices are placed inside the cavity.

Vacuumed Glazing:- Ultra-Slim Vacuum Glazing for Optimum Thermal Insulation

With the proposed tightening of energy-saving regulations, today’s windows with conventional double glazing and Ug values of 1.0 W/m²K will no longer meet thermal-insulation requirements in a few years. Triple glazing provides adequate insulation values (with an argon filling and two low-E layers, for example, Ug = 0.7/Wm²K), but it results in a 50 per cent greater weight and large system thicknesses of between 30 and 50 mm. Vacuum insulation glazing marks a new approach. Whereas the insulation effect at the transition from double to triple glazing is the outcome of greater system thicknesses, in the case of vacuum glazing a genuine qualitative improvement is achieved by obviating the thermal conduction caused by the gas in the cavity between the panes. Using this form of construction, even with double glazing, excellent insulation values of Ug = 0.5/m²K can be achieved with system thicknesses of less than 10 mm.

Page 18: 4ftbsys catalogue rev 02

Highly insulating window for the future-Vacume Glazing

Technically speaking, the production of vacuum insulation glazing depends on evacuating the gas from the cavity between the panes and thus reducing the pressure to levels below 10-3mbar. As a result of the external atmospheric pressure that is caused by the evacuation of the cavity, the panes of glass are subject to a load of 10 tonnes per square metre. To prevent the panes being pressed together, small supports or spacers must be incorporated at regular intervals in the barely 1 mm cavity. With the support of German partners from the realm of research and industry recently developed an alternative concept for the edge fixing with vacuum insulation glazing, as a result of which large-scale, cost-effective technical production is almost within reach. This concept foresees the use of layers of metal foil, which are applied to the panes of glass in a cold soldering process that avoids damaging the sensitive low-E layers.

Vacuum Glazing is fast Emerging as "Game Changing Technology"

Aluminium Mesh

Expanded metal is a form of metal stock made by shearing a metal plate in a press, so that the metal stretches, leaving diamond-shaped voids surrounded by interlinked bars of the metal. The most common method of manufacture is to simultaneously slit and stretch the material with one motion. Expanded metal is often used for architectural details and finds use in security applications such as in the walls of a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility because, in heavier grades, it is difficult to breach without heavy cutting equipment or explosives. We provide more than 200 types of mesh for applications in architecture, satisfying most designers' requirements. These innovative products can be used not only for cladding or false ceilings but also to separate and decorate whatever environment. The material used is recyclable. The colour is not just a simple coating but it's designed to offer special aesthetics effects making any project more valuable. Besides having all the colours of the RAL, We also offers customized and unique colours with innovative effects. The powder coatings applied are high resistance and non-toxic.

Applications of Expanded Metal-Aluminium Mesh Walkways, footbridges, footsteps, safety fences, reinforcing of concrete as well as for shielding in buildings Architectural constructions…Innovation is the end. Advantages of Aluminium Mesh

Light and cost efficient :- It is a great advantage that expanded metal is not assembled nor welded, but always made in one piece. No metal is lost in the expanding process, hence expanded metal is a cost effective alternative to other products. Because there are no strained joints or welds, expanded metal is stronger and is ideal for forming, pressing and cutting. Due to the expansion the weight per metre is less than that of the original sheet. Due to the expansion a much bigger open area is possible compared to other similar products. Greater strength:- The three-dimensional shape of the meshes is another advantage since the areas where the meshes meet are strong and enable the material to stand a far heavier point load than similar products or a flat sheet. Anti-skid qualities:-Some patterns have a type of mesh with special qualities that not only make the surface non-skid, but also give the expanded metal water and wind repellent qualities.

Wall Cladding Systems High Pressure Laminates-Exterior Grade.

For Durability, colour choice, clarity and flexibility High Pressure Laminates (HPL)is produced by saturating multiple layers of Kraft paper with phenolic resin. A layer of printed décor paper is placed on top of the Kraft paper before pressing. The resulting sandwich is fused together under heat and pressure (more than 1,000 PSI). Because phenolic and melamine resins are thermoset plastics, the curing process transforms the resin into plastic by a cross linking process that converts the paper sheets into a single, rigid laminated sheet. Thermosetting creates strong, irreversible bonds that contribute to HPL’s durability

HPL Properties Resistance to surface abrasion Resistance to boiling water Resistance to dry heat Resistance to impact Resistance to stress cracking Resistance to scratch Resistance to discolouration Resistance to colour change under artificial lighting Resistance to cigarette burn Resistance to steam

Safety: A Core Cultural Value The most valued asset at 4ftbsys is our people, and nothing is more important than providing them a safe environment

in which to work. The health and safety of our people is beyond a priority for us, it is a core value deeply rooted in our culture and reflected in every aspect of operations. It is an all-pervasive mindset that embeds considerations of workplace safety, employee wellbeing, and environmental protection in every employee action. Our goal is nothing short of zero incidents on all of our worksites each and every day. We believe that such performance is achievable with the uncompromising commitment and diligence of every 4ftbsys employee in everything we do.

Jobsite Safety The biggest challenge for any construction company is the work that takes place on the jobsite, and it is on this demanding playing field that 4ftbsys most clearly differentiates itself. In addition to training our people in the discipline of relentless diligence as a means to optimum operational safety, we fine-tune our planning, strategies and tactics to the unique requirements of each individual facade building project we undertake. We have developed a unique expertise over decades of experience in cladding some of the most challenging building projects ever constructed. This experience has been documented in a concise compilation of best practices with respect to the operational safety of custom facade system installation, yet we know that each project presents a unique scenario to be analyzed and potential challenges anticipated. Drawing upon this deep accumulation of experience, we craft a custom safety plan in direct response to each specific project context.

Means and Methods Site Safety Plan A Means and Methods Installation Plan specifically crafted for each project undertaken by 4ftbsys is accompanied by a separate Site Safety Plan. This plan details the measures and practices that will be instituted to assure site safety throughout our facade installation activities. The compilation of the Site Safety Plan is a well known choreographed process among site operations managers, a process in which every site activity is identified and assessed for safety risk. Specific strategy is detailed to mitigate risk, and personal protective practices and equipment are specified.

A Living Document Our Site Safety Plan is no 300-page tome that is quickly parked on a top shelf to gather dust. It is a concise document that is constantly referenced and utilized in lockstep with our other site planning documents. The practices, methods and procedures detailed within are fully integrated into our daily activities.

The Measure of Safety Most of us know by now that what gets measured is what gets done. 4ftbsys has gone to extraordinary lengths to document all aspects of performance with respect to safety, and to use this as feedback to our operations groups. In addition, all of our people are fully aware that safe practice is among the top criteria when it comes to project and personal performance evaluation.
