Introduction

The TMT bars obtain their strengthfrom Thermo‐Mechanical Treatmentthey undergo. Under this process,ordinary steel bars are first subject tointense cooling (through quenchingprocess in the Tempcore coolingsystem) just after they have come outof the rolling mill. The suddenquenching process reduces thetemperature of the outer layer, thus,making it hard. However, the coreremains hot. After furtheratmospheric cooling, it tempers. Thismakes the TMT bar ductile, supertough and gives high strength.

In ordinary bars, the excessivepresence of carbon affects itsweldability. However, thisproblem doesn’t exist in TMTbars. The carbon content inTMT bars is low, thus,improving its ductility. It isusually restricted to 0.2% togive the bars superiorweldability without affectingits quality and strength. Thejoints of the TMT bars can beeasily welded using ordinaryelectrodes.

As per a report published in theBusiness Standard, the demandsof re‐rolled steel and TMT barsare expected to rise after Diwalithis year. Till July this year, theindustry was operating at total70% utilisation of the processingplants. Due to the upcominggovernment infrastructuredevelopment process, theinfrastructure and real estateindustry are expected to revive.As a result, the markets for TMTbars and other steel bars areexpected to improve.

Global demands for steel ex‐China are expected to rise by1.8% this year. Apart from that,the implementation of GST(Goods and Service Tax) fromApril 2017 will further improvesteel demands in the country.Implementation of GST isexpected to ease processes andincrease transparency alongwith increasing publicparticipation in both urban andrural construction. As a resultdemands for steel and TMTbars are expected to grow.
