Saddius, a roman warrior and his army are about to invade China.coming after the King as revenge for theft of the Romans’ gold and jewelsReaches China at midnight, successfully breaks into his palace and dodges the guards, is hunting for king but cannot find himComes across a chamber with a young lady inside, turns out to be the King’s daughter – Princess Su YungDecides to kidnap her as an attempt to get the King to do what he says Saddius enters the chamber, creeps up to where she is layingSu Yung feels his presence and suddenly awakensHe aggressively covers her mouth but is then stunned by her beauty and loosens his grip on her

With puppy-like eyes he softly whispers “stay calm, I am not going to hurt you.” His whisper sent shivers down her spine causing her to knock over a lantern onto the diamond-encrusted floor. The loud thud shook the guards who come running and yelling down the hall. With this warning, Saddius is forced to leave Su Yung’s chamber hastily and unfreezing her from his grip. She shouts “Wait! Whoever you are, you must meet me at the tea-house midnight. Follow Yuriko pathway and I shall be there waiting.” Saddius nods obediently and departs the chamber just seconds before the guards barge in. Su Yung screams and the guards notice the candle-wax bleeding out of the broken lantern, in which they respond with apologies and order the maid into the chamber to clear up the mess.

However on the way back from gun training one night, Shanghai – the King’s top guard, overhears strange giggling and chatter coming from an abandoned tea-houseHe travels over and takes a look only to find it is princess Su Yung fraternising with her father’s enemy - Saddius Otho In utter shock and horror Shanghai rushes back to the palace and reports his findings to the king immediately

Following midnight they meet up, spend time etc and it becomes a regular habitThe King starts to get suspicious of Su Yung’s whereabouts and her obsession with always “going out to get fresh midnight air” but doesn’t act on it as he loves and trusts his one and only daughter

The king is fuelled with anger and heartbreak that his daughter has lied and betrayed himSu Yung notices the change of atmosphere and behaviour in her father and assumes that something isn’t right, thinks her father knowsShe meets Saddius in the tea-house following day in all black attire to hide her identity. She tells him they can’t see each other any longer due to her fatherHe replies “No! This cannot be, I am in love with you!”, she breaks down and says “I will always love you” and then dashes back to the palace, leaving Saddius confused and in tears alsoNext evening he arrives at the tea-house to see she isn’t there which shocks him as she is usually waiting there first

At the palace, the King confronts his daughter and later traps her in the chamber. He forbids her from going out of his sight againMeanwhile back at the tea-house, Saddius arrives there at midnight each day, awaiting her arrival anxiously only to find that she hasn’t shown up yet againOne night he makes his way back to the tea-house in a desperate attempts to see Su Yung for the last time. He is overwhelmed to see a shadow is there waiting for him however as he gets closer he realises it isn’t Su Yung standing there, it is her father…

After Shanghai brutally murders Saddius the king is finally satisfied with what he has accomplished. He returns back to the castle not realising Sun Yung is not in her chamber sleeping. Although he discovers an abondened letter sitting on top of her bed, “My heart still aches in sadness and secret tears still flow. What it meant to lose you, no one will ever know”. The king furiously sends the guards to find the princess. Suddenly the guards return to the castle speechless and sorrowful with a scarf grip tightly to their fists, blood slowly dripping through their fingers. The king stares in rage and walks silently to his room.

Shangai realises later how much love his daughter had or Saddius and decides to bury them together and put aside the conflict between the Romans.
