Outline

• Operation for bikes at signalised

intersections and pedestrian crossings:

- reducing delay or waiting times

- providing adequate clearance times

- detection of bikes

- phasing and bike signal displays

Bicycle Critical Route Corridors

VicRoads and Bicycle Network,

Victoria have identified 12

Critical Route Corridors.

CRC 9 which starts from

Nicholson St, East Melbourne

and runs towards Box Hill

Activity Area.

Crosses local and arterial roads.

Reduce delays for cyclists and pedestrians

• Double phase for cyclists and pedestrian

demands only (i.e. two introductions in

one cycle), outside the AM and PM peaks

• Vehicles cannot demand the double

phase.

• Bikes receive an early start of 6 sec

(single green bicycle aspect), similar to

PT early start.

• PUFFIN operation for peds and cyclists

Operate one through phase instead of two

phases with split phasing.

Bicycle movement auto-introduces in B phase,

Distance to clear Princes Highway

intersection is 67 metres.

A car travelling at 60 km/hr takes 4 sec

Summary

• Considering more opportunities to assist

cyclists to cross at intersections and

pedestrian operated signals, safely and

with less delay.

• Prioritise bicycle movements with early

starts and bicycle displays.

• Include more bicycle detection systems

in designs.
