The pillars of a successful team
How it can be
Trust Absence of trust -> Invulnerability
´ Trust is the confidence among team members that their peers’ intentions are good.
´ There’s no reason to be protective or careful around the group.
´ How to get it´ Team members have to make themselves vulnerable to one another and be
confident that their respective vulnerabilities won’t be used against them.´ Weaknesses. Skill deficiencies. Interpersonal shortcomings. Mistakes. Requests for help (or
assist each other).
´ Output´ With trust, a team makes conflict possible. Members don’t hesitate to engage in
passionate and emotional debate, knowing that they won’t be punished.
Conflict Fear of conflict -> Artificial harmony
´ People engaged in productive conflict know that the only purpose is to produce the best possible solution in the shortest period of time.
´ Healthy conflict is a time saver.
´ How to get it´ Team members should openly express their opinions. Without trust, they won’t do
it and they will guard comments.´ Solutions tend to be worse.
´ Output´ By engaging productive conflict and tapping into team members’ perspectives
and opinions, a team can confidently commit and buy in to a decision
Commitment Lack of commitment -> Ambiguity
´ There’s no ambiguity in the plan to follow.
´ How to get it´ The team has to make clear and timely decisions forward with complete buy-in
from every member of the team.´ Even those who voted against the decision (whose opinions have been heard and
considered).
´ Output´ Because team members’ are committed to a plan and have a clear sense of
what’s expected, they can call each other on their behaviours and actions.
AccountabilityAvoidance of Accountability -> Low standards
´ It refers to the willingness of team members to call their peers on performance or behaviours that might hurt the team.
´ Output´ It maintain high standards because there’s nothing like the fear of letting down
our teammates.
´ It motivates people to improve their performance.
´ What if it doesn’t happen…´ If teammates are not being held accountable for their contributions, they will be
more likely to turn their attention to their own needs.
´ They shift their attentions to personal areas rather than collective results
Results Inattention to Results -> Status and Ego
´ Being all team members accountable for the same goal will make it happen.
´ In the other case, team members put their individual needs (such as ego, career development, or recognition) above the collective goals of the team.
