安特卫普以诸多美食出名，这其中尤为引人注目的
是：安特卫普小手饼干。这种手形饼干从1934年就开
始出现了，但是这个小小的饼干代表的可远不止那些
饼干。
安特卫普小手饼干还代表着，比如说，安特卫普
这个名字的来历。按照民间传说，年轻的英雄—布拉
博从贪婪的巨人安蒂公手中解放了这座城市。英雄在
一场战斗中打败了巨人，并且将巨人的手切了扔到斯
凯尔特河里。所以，就有了Antwerpen（安特卫普，荷
兰语写法）这个名字，来源于古老的当地语言，当地
说“手”叫 “hand”, “扔”这个动词叫“werpen”
所以把手扔掉就是“Antwerpen” （h不发音）。

The city of Antwerp is known for many culinary delights.
One stands out in particular: the Antwerp hand, a hand-
shaped biscuit that has been around since 1934. But this
little cookie represents more than meets the eye...
The Antwerp hand symbolises, for instance,
the founding of Antwerp. According to folklore, the young
hero Brabo freed the city of the greedy giant Antigoon,
defeating hime in battle and throwing his hand into the
river Scheldt. Hence the name Antwerpen (as it is written
in Dutch), derived from the old local words for hand
(‘ant’) and throw (‘wearpan’).
Of course as we know, legends are rarely true...
But with a little imagination, you could say that the
Antwerp hand is a symbol that represents the entire
city. Just like the ideal, small cookie, Antwerp has all the
ingredients that make a modern metropolis, and they’re
all close at hand.
With its location in the heart of Europe, on the
banks of the river Scheldt, Antwerp is the ideal hub
for successful business, offering an international port,
excellent industrial and logistics infrastructure, and a
thriving creative and start-up scene. No wonder that
Antwerp gradually developed into one of the biggest
ports around the globe, as well as the world’s leading
diamond centre and a trendsetting fashion capital.
Antwerp is ‘open for business’ in every meaning of the
word: from the academic world, over entrepreneurship,

An economic hub: the ideal backdrop for business
With its unique central location along the banks of the Scheldt river, Antwerp offers
excellent connectivity to both the North Sea and the continental mainland. The city opens
a gateway toward all major consumer centres, with no less than 60% of Europe’s total
purchasing power within a 500 km radius. But that’s not the only reason why business
thrives so well in Antwerp.
#1: A driver of Belgian and European economic growth
Belgium�and�Antwerp�are�drivers�of�economic�growth�
in�several�cutting-edge�industries,�such�as�IT�and�
chemistry.�In�2013,�Belgium�had�a�gross�domestic�
product�(GDP)�of�382.7�billion�euros�and�a�GDP�per�capita�
of�34,500�euros.�What’s�more,�in�terms�of�purchasing�
power�parities,�the�Belgian�GDP�per�capita�is�about�20%�
higher�than�the�European�Union�average.
Within�Belgium,�Antwerp�definitely�stands�out:�in�
2011,�the�Province�of�Antwerp�had�a�GDP�per�capita�
of�38,900�euros,�while�the�GDP�per�capita�for�the�
Arrondissement�of�Antwerp�reached�42,200�euros.��
In�terms�of�purchasing�power�parities,�the�GDP�per�capita�
of�the�latter�surpasses�the�EU�average�by�a�staggering�
51%,�making�it�not�only�a�key�economic�driver�for�the�
whole�country,�but�also�for�the�entire�continent.�

In�2013�alone,�foreign�companies�ploughed�a�staggering�
13.9�billion�euros�into�the�region�and�initiated�175�
investment�projects,�118�of�which�were�greenfield�
investments.�With�45�projects,�nine�more�than�the�year�
before,�Antwerp�as�a�province�indisputably�lies�at�the�

One�of�the�main�drivers�for�this�skyrocketing�trend�
is�the�notional interest deduction.�This�innovative�
tax�incentive�allows�companies�to�deduct�a�fictitious�
interest�from�their�taxable�income,�based�on�their�
shareholders’�equity.�This�levels�out�the�differences�
between�funding�with�equity�and�funding�with�loans,�
and�is�especially�interesting�to�shelter�income�from�
operational�activities.
#3: From a petrochemicals cluster to diamond centre
With�a�portfolio�of�300�different�chemicals,�the�Port�of�
Antwerp�is�the�primary�backbone�of�Europe’s�largest�
petrochemicals�cluster,�as�well�as�the�most�diverse�one�
around�the�globe.�It’s�no�surprise�that�ten�out�of�the�
world’s�top�20�chemicals�firms�chose�to�set�up�a�base�
in�Antwerp.�The�city�is�also�globally�renowned�for�its�
leading�diamond�and�fashion�industry.�These�creative�
sectors�reap�the�benefits�of�Antwerp’s�dynamism:��
a�place�where�culture�resonates�with�opportunity.�
#4: A vibrant Start-up City
The�City�of�Antwerp�has�a�vibrant�start-up�scene,�
where�multiple�incubators�help�new�companies�and�
innovative�entrepreneurs�find�venture�capital.��
What’s�more,�several�local�governmental�initiatives�
exist�to�support�start-ups�by�providing�affordable�office�
space�and�expert�business�advice.�Start-ups�in�Antwerp�
also�benefit�from�an�ideal�testing�ground�for�their�

The�name�Antwerp�goes�as�far�as�726�AD,�around�the�

a�mythical�giant�called�Druon�Antigoon,�who�lived�near�
the�river�Scheldt�and�exacted�a�toll�from�passengers�

by�a�young�hero�named�Brabo,�who�cut�off�Antigoon’s�
hand�and�flung�it�into�the�Scheldt.�Hence�—�according�
to�legend�at�least�—�the�city’s�Dutch�name�‘Antwerpen’,�
presumably�derived�from�the�local�words�for�hand�(‘ant’)�
and�throw�(‘wearpan’).�Today,�this�remarkable�myth�is�
celebrated�by�a�statue�in�front�of�the�Town�Hall�and�a�
delicious�hand-shaped�pastry�called�‘Antwerps�handje’�
or�‘Antwerp�hand’.�

leading�role�in�various�chapters�of�European�history.�

agreement�with�the�People’s�Republic�of�China,��

agreement�—�a�sign�of�the�great�and�growing�friendship�
between�these�two�cities�—�was�signed�by�M.�Wang�
Daohan,�the�then-mayor�of�Shanghai�and�Bob�Cools,��
the�then-mayor�of�Antwerp.�
Connections�to�Shanghai�have�since�been�developed�
and�nurtured.�Business�contacts�are�at�the�core,��
and�plenty�of�cultural�and�educational�collaborations�
solidify�the�friendship�between�the�two�cities.��

The�Port�of�Shanghai�and�APEC�(Antwerp�Port�
Engineering�and�Consulting)�have�a�professional�
partnership�that�dates�back�to�1985.�The�main�purpose�
is�the�establishment�of�friendly�port�relations�and�the�
planning,�construction,�management�and�operation�
of�both�ports.�But�the�collaboration�goes�a�lot�further�
still:�ever�since�the�1980s,�Chinese�employees�have�
come�to�Antwerp�to�receive�training�on�various�port�

La�Chouffe�and�Liefmans,�has�been�bringing�Belgian�
beers�to�the�Chinese�market�since�2007.
•�Alcatel-Lucent�Shanghai�Bell�provides�end-to-end�
telecommunication�solutions�and�high-quality�
services�to�customers�in�China�and�around�the�world.�
•�Agfa-Gevaert�has�a�regional�centre�of�operations�in�
Shanghai,�which�is�responsible�for�sales,�service�and�
logistics�in�China.�This�imaging�group�has�been�active�
in�the�Chinese�market�since�1985.
•�Egemin�Automation�serves�the�Chinese�and�South-
East�Asian�and�Pacific�market�from�two�offices�in�

安特卫普，中国人的另一个家乡
安特卫普拥有比利时最大的华人社区。中国人在安特
卫普定居主要有三波浪潮：
20世纪初，第一批中国人踏上安特卫普的海岸。他们
在大型欧洲公司的汽船上工作。举例来说，比利时航
运集团（CMB）就曾经雇佣了相当能干的中国人在其
汽船上工作。
安特卫普对于中国水手来说也是一个重要的港口。
起初，他们只是寻找两次航行之间临时的安置所，
之后他们决定在安特卫普定居、工作。第一批中
式餐厅，比如“WahKel”, 在20世纪20年代开始营
业。“WahKel”字面意思是“海外水手”，即便到今
天在Schipperskwartier地区还能找到这家餐馆。
第二波中国人抵达安特卫普是在第二次世界大战结束
之后。他们中许多人一开始在同胞们的中餐馆的厨房

The story of a personal relationship
Economic motives brought Shanghai and Antwerp together, but this spark soon spread
to other areas. Stimulated by a large local Chinese community, Antwerp and Shanghai
in 1984 became sister cities. From then on, the cultural twinning only grew stronger.
Recently, this solid friendship was honoured by the construction of a beautiful Chinese
pagoda gate at the entrance to Antwerp’s Chinatown.
Antwerp, where Chinese people are home
Antwerp�is�home�to�the�biggest�community�of�Chinese�
people�in�Belgium.�The�settlement�of�Chinese�people�in�
Antwerp�has�occurred�in�four�main�waves:
The�first�Chinese�citizens�set�foot�on�Antwerp�shore�at�the�
beginning�of�the�twentieth�century.�They�worked�on�the�
steamships�of�large�European�companies.�The�‘Compagnie�
Maritime�Belge’�(CMB),�for�example,�recruited�highly�
capable�Chinese�to�work�on�its�steamships.�
Antwerp�was�also�an�important�port�for�Chinese�sailors.�
They�originally�sought�temporary�shelter�between�two�
voyages,�and�later�came�to�live�and�work�there.�The�first�
Chinese�restaurants,�such�as�Wah�Kel,�opened�in�the�
1920s.�Wah�Kel�literally�means�‘overseas�sailors’�and�can�
still�be�found�today�in�the�Schipperskwartier.�
The�next�generation�of�Chinese�citizens�arrived�in�the�
city�after�the�end�of�World�War�II.�Many�of�them�began�
working�as�kitchen�assistants�to�their�compatriots,�
later�starting�their�own�restaurants.�They�soon�spread�
to�the�far�corners�of�Flanders,�while�Antwerp�remained�
the�supplies�hub�for�these�restaurants.�
In�1976,�the�big�Chinese�supermarket�Sun�Wah��
opened�near�the�Antwerp�Central�Station.��
Many�Chinese�traders,�bars�and�clubs�sprang�up�
nearby.�The�lively�neighbourhood�was�a�major�
attraction�for�Chinese�citizens,�as�well�as�for�the�rest�of�
Antwerp�and�visiting�tourists.�This�street,�which�today�
boasts�a�beautiful�Chinese�pagoda,�is�the�beating�heart�
of�Antwerp’s�Chinatown.�

牌楼，永恒友谊的象征
从2010年开始，安特卫普唐人街的入口处就多了一座
色彩艳丽的牌楼。牌楼是在当地华人社区和市政府的
共同结晶，代表着安特卫普和华人社区的永恒友谊，
当然引申开来，也代表着安特卫普和其他中国人的友
谊。牌楼的建造可是一项壮举！牌楼是在中国生产
的，之后再将所有部件拆开运到安特卫普，在那里重
新组装。这给本来就充满生气的火车站区域增添了活
力，这座牌楼是欧洲最大最美丽的中式牌楼之一。
姐妹城市
姐妹城市经常通过组织文化活动来增强两个城市之间
的友好关系。安特卫普市和上海市从1984年结成姐妹
城市以来，就一直秉承这项传统。以下例举一些久负
盛名的文化交流项目 ：
•2006年：安特卫普汉朝展览
•2009年：“图像的故事——安特卫普古典大师精品

牌楼
The pagoda gate: symbol of eternal friendship
The�entrance�to�Antwerp’s�Chinatown�has�been�decorated�
with�a�colourful�pagoda�gate�since�2010.�The�gate,�a�joint�
initiative�between�the�local�Chinese�community�and�the�
city�council,�symbolises�the�eternal�friendship�between�
Antwerp�and�the�Chinese�community,�and�the�rest�of�
the�people�of�China�by�extension.�The�construction�of�
the�gate�was�a�fantastic�feat.�It�was�built�in�China�and�
then�shipped�to�Antwerp�in�pieces,�where�it�then�was�
reassembled.�Adding�to�the�vibrant�character�of�the�
station�area,�the�pagoda�gate�is�one�of�the�biggest�and�
most�beautiful�Chinese�gates�in�Europe.�
Sister cities
Sister�cities�often�organise�cultural�events�to�highlight�the�
link�between�them.�Antwerp�and�Shanghai,�which�have�
been�sisters�since�1984,�keep�that�tradition�at�the�fore�
with�a�long�list�of�prestigious�cultural�projects:
•�2006:�exhibition�about�the�Han�dynasty�held��
in�Antwerp
•�2009:�A�Story�of�the�Image;�a�tent�in�the�Shanghai�
Art�Museum�devoted�to�the�Flemish�painters�from�
the�fifteenth�and�sixteenth�Century,�the�so-called�
Flemish�Primitives�
•�2009-2010:�exhibition�about�the�Tang�Dynasty�held�
in�Antwerp
•�2012:�part�of�the�Chinese�junks�(ships)�model�
collection�held�at�the�Antwerp�MAS�museum��
was�displayed�in�the�China�Maritime�Museum��
in�Shanghai.
•�The�city�and�province�of�Antwerp�host�the�Belgian�
Pavilion�at�the�Shanghai�Biennale�once�every��
two�years.
