Global Focus on Asia
Asia will contribute over half of the global growth in the next five years and
already is a global powerhouse. With globalization, the world continues to get
smaller and more highly interdependent. As a result, there is:
Emergence of highly skilled workforces around the world
Expansiveness of a networked infrastructure
Interconnectivity of economies, culture, workforce and global outlooks
Focus on the global economy as a talent economy – work flows to where it is
done best
A consumer-driven market explosion - with the rise of middle class in India,
China and other Asian emerging markets
Tremendous opportunity in North America - with its highly educated and
affluent Pan-Asian professionals, consumers and business owners

How Ascend has helped our members
“Though there may be ceilings, boundaries, barriers, obstacles - grass, bamboo or otherwise – don’t be part of the
construction crew. Be part of the demolition crew. It’s not your job to create the barriers for yourself or the obstacles for
yourself. It’s your job to take them down”
Bunty Bohra, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs
“So if we are a culture that is quiet, shy and acquiesces, how does that actually work when you’re trying to get a job or
advance within your company? I think Ascend, like other professional organizations, allows members to have
leadership development experiences, what I mean by that is public speaking, negotiation, teambuilding – in a way that
they may be more forthright or more at the forefront by serving on a committee or a chapter”
Kaplan Mobray, U.S. Diversity Programs Leader, Deloitte LLP
“The whole idea is that you are a good employee and a good technical contributor but there are other skills you need
[in order] to be promoted through the organization”
Buck Gee, Retired VP Business Development, Cisco
“With Ascend, I’ve been able to network and meet people from all over the country and all over the world, who are
other Asians. I had a stereotype at one point about what I thought all Asians would be like and that stereotype has
been broken down through this organization. This experience [has] really helped me to break down walls and barriers
with other people so I can mentor and be mentored by people who grew up in completely different cultures.”
Melinda Brett, Associate, PricewaterhouseCoopers
“[Ascend is] about helping individuals look at themselves and do the soul searching to determine, “what am I doing
today?” “What am I going to be doing three years from now? Five years from now?”
Jose Garcia, Senior Vice President – Diversity & Inclusion, Bank of America
“The Ascend organization is all about developing professionals throughout the United States, especially for Asian
Americans. You don’t have to leave anything Asian behind to be successful.”
Michael Fung, Senior Vice President – Finance, Wal-Mart
