Challenge Coins-A Look at their Significance
The significance of challenge coins is largely unknown by most people. This article aims to help
people understand the importance of these coins.
A challenge coin is not like an ordinary coin which you can find lying around. The coin
represents a unit organization or a group. The coins are very special as they are given to
service personnel to raise their morals and enforce a sense of unity amongst them.
The origins of these special coins is debatable, however it is reported that the use of
these coins began during the First World War. The first few challenge coins were gold-
plated and had an engraving of the squadron’s insignia and are extremely valuable
today.
The most popular challenge coins today include the navy, Marine Corps, army, air force
and police challenge coins.
They are considered to be the biggest honors for members a group and are a sign of
team
The shape may not always be round, some are triangular and the shape primarily
depends on the particular meaning of the project the coin represents. The coins maybe
made of bronze, gold, silver or platinum.
The coins must be carried at all times and defacing a coin in any way is highly
unacceptable. The most acceptable way of carrying a challenge coin is in a pouch worn
around the neck.
