Taboo questions

CI Styria Annual Convention

Is the cybernetic vision of ICT as the source of a second industrial revolution bearing the promise of emancipation for the citizenry still valid?

There exist online ties that are specific enough to be called ‘communitarian’? What is that makes community ‘more ethical’?

Isn’t the notion of ‘empowerment’ a rather naive way to express the relation between society and ICT in terms of simple causality?

Who benefits from the online collaboration of millions of individuals? Is decentralization sufficient to prevent powers from harnessing the creative potential of the Net?

Through research: how social actors involved in online aggregations themselves account for the empowering potential of ICT?

3 respects

l Organizational aspects

1) In existing organisations

Unpredictability ofcreativity

Ceaselessly re-aggregates groups

Example: Discordia Launched 2003 by developers and net artists

Aimed at overcoming the dichotomy between collective practices of communication through mailing lists Vs. individually run blogs

Among the causes of its closure, it failed in harmonizing different professional cultures (programmers, artists, theorists, producers), in finding a common communication style

It tried just to "create a context"

2) Re-design of the information chain

Who benefits from the work of millions of individuals online?

3) Change in the notion of ‘creativity’

From function Vs. aesthetics to design as meanings embedded into “Dinge”

From engineering (build from scratch) to bricoleuring (re-combination, attention to details)

From objectivity to the politics of the “well-designed”

From individual Vs. collective to Dinge (gatherings): the result of collaborative actions
