introduction

August 2005. The brazilian digital market was beggining to get hot again after the bubble burst. International groups shopping for digital agencies. Brazilian Ink group, owner of some of the most prolific film production companies in Latin America, envisioned the possibility of putting together a group of experimental interactive production, looking at the invasion of video on the web. Instead of simply putting together scene directors, photographers and film professionals to produce video for new media, we added to our roster of people programmers, developers, project managers, webdesigners, user experience specialists, motion designers, 3D artists and copywriters.

Almost 3 years later, colmeia is a full-service digital production company, with a brazilian passport and a world class portfolio. Our clients are ad agencies - people that can translate our work and whose ideas challenge us every day. Every project is a different story. And yes, we love it like this.

But this is only the surface. We are a group of people commited to innovation. To outstanding creative execution. To overcoming limits. To having fun and working a lot.

colmeia means beehive in portuguese. But hell no, we’re not bees, we are just like bears, true investigators, in a continuous search for sweet and fresh honey :)

a crazy little thing called “statement”

We make interactive experiences (whether branded or not) to tell and distribute stories. To build relationships. To entertain and engage people. In order to make it happen, we put together content and software, and give it a stir. We develop and remix technology whenever necessary, with the same passion than when we shoot films.

...and it’s about what this group do and think

We think ideas are grass. If it’s not done or being done, bring it on. And if it’s been done before, oh, we’re not interested.

We are really agressive when it comes to quality. Go figure: we do creative execution. This is what feed our kids.

We do serious user experience planning. Etnography, usability, etc.

We write stories. And we like to do it with an agency’s copywriter sitting on the middle of the meeting room.

We do animation and 3D modelling. After Effects, Maya, tools are tools, you know.

Again: We write a hell lot of code.

We build mashups. Yes, we write a hell lot of code. AS3, VVVV, Processing, OpenFrameworks. iPhone apps too.

We design games. From paper to screen. Concept, execution and deployment.

We make films. We are part of one of the strongest film production holding companies in Brazil.

now cutting to the chase:

In today’s digital landscape, as an agency you cannot assume that you have every single resource in house. Well, you can, but who will believe you? :)

We don’t assume that either, but we do what we can to keep multidisciplinarity at our source code. At colmeia we regard people not as assets nor resources, but as true partners - and we expect the same from our clients when they think of us. People who are truly passionated about life, about discovering new ways for doing great stuff to be experimented, to be tasted.

In the previous pages we’ve shown you some of the people that is part of colmeia’s fixed structure of 35 people. Every one of them can manage freelancers and consultants or even be cloned and multiplied to create critical mass to deliver your project.

We don’t have chemical weapons, but we believe in Al Qaeda’s cell system: descentralized teams can not only deliver great work, but also bring originalty, freshness and variety of points of view to the table.

Another thing we try to keep in our source code: curiosity. (Corporate world calls it R&D. One little example below.)

Experimental projects20% of the timesheet of our team is dedicated to experimenta-tion. It is really hard to keep the ball rolling on this, but our project managers are crazy dudes who take the challenge

Right: Wii experiments opened the development of a wii socket for mac. From that, we created a wii app to simulate the berimbau, a brazilian percussion instrument

But the true challenge is to make experimental projects become “sellable”.

Sometimes we get to accomplish that.

Right: the experimentation with the wii platform enabled us to develop 4 wii games for a brazilian event about sustainability and ecology.

who you should call: paimei

In Tarantino’s Kill Bill, before being poisoned by Elle for plucking out her eye, Pai Mei teaches The Bride the "Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique" she uses to kill Bill.

André Passamani, Eduardo Camargo and Kazi are partners and executive producers of colmeia. We call ourselves “Pai Mei”, an entity that responds for the management of the company.

André Passamani is a journalist and runs IT projects since 1997. He’s got a pragmatic vision and a huge respect for humans and cats.

Eduardo Camargo is a civil engineer that worked as marketing @ BCP/Claro, a major cellphone carrier, and as online media director @ Leo Burnett for five years prior to joining colmeia.

Kazi has 13 years of web project management experience and content development, and is, among the 3 partners, the one oriental face that inspired us to adopt the “Pai Mei” thing :)
