Vaccines and your dog
What is Rabies?-Viral disease of mammals and can be transmitted directly to humans. All pets are required by law to be vaccinated for Rabies.
What is Distemper?-Widespread, highly contagious virus that can cause permanent neurological damage and can be fatal. It is spread by all bodily fluids and can become airborne through nasal and respiratory secretions.
What is Leptospirosis?-Bacteria spread through urine of infected wildlife, which can contaminate water and soil. Can cause permanent kidney and liver damage. It is often fatal and is zoonotic (transmissible from pets to people.)
What is Lyme?-Tick-borne disease. Although the vaccine is not 100% effective, we consider it another layer of protection to be used in conjunction with a good quality flea and tick preventative.
What is Parvovirus?-Spread through feces and vomit, highly contagious and virulent to puppies. Can cause severe gastrointestinal damage leading to dehydration and sometimes death.
What is Parainflenza?-A virus in the “kennel cough” family. It is carried in nasal and respiratory secretions, and can cause a hacking cough that can take weeks to resolve.
What is CAV2?-Canine Adenovirus Type 2, or viral hepatitis can cause respiratory disease, also part of “kennel cough” family. Spread by urine contaminants on fur, blankets, etc.
What is Bordetella?-Bacteria that contributes to the “kennel cough” complex. Spread by respiratory secretions through inhalation. Can cause nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, and sometimes deeper respiratory infections.
But aren’t vaccines dangerous? What about the risks?
As with any medication, reactions can occur. Vaccines work by stimulating an immune response, and some pets respond in an inappropriate way. Please monitor your pet for vomiting, facial swelling, lethargy, or respiratory changes. If any of these should occur, please call or return your pet to us right away. If an emergency occurs after our normal business hours, please contact Regional Veterinary Referral Center (an emergency clinic in Springfield) at 703-451-8900.
We believe the small chance of reactions from vaccines is outweighed by the protection they offer from diseases/illnesses.
Vaccine Protocol for Puppies Between 6 weeks and 16 weeks old puppies will receive vaccines and boosters to offer them full protection.
At 1 year of age dogs will receive DHLPP, Lyme, Rabies and Bordetella vaccines. They will also have a fecal and heartworm test performed.
