WHAT IS A DRONE?Drone: (noun) any unmanned aircraft, ship, or vehicle that can
navigate autonomously beyond line of sight either with or without human inputs
Current perceptions of drones range from positive to extremely negative
Companies view them as efficient future logistics optimization tools
Certain nations view them very negatively because of civilian losses due to unmanned drone missile attacks
Vision from 2013
Future delivery system designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using drones
Amazon claims government regulatory support needed for them to achieve their vision
Cheaper, safer, faster
LAND-BASED DELIVERYMEN OF THE FUTURE
Starship Technologies, launched by co-founders of Skype
Already delivering packages to homes in the United Kingdom
Testing in United States in May 2016
Moves at 4 mph using 9 on board cameras to detect people and objects
Recipient recognition capabilities
Currently unnamed; naming contest online
DOMINO’S AUTONOMOUS PIZZA DELIVERYAustralian tech startup Marathon Targets has
built an autonomous pizza delivery robot unit (DRU)
Domino’s DRU is currently testing in Queensland, Australia
Compartments for hot and cold food
Compliant with federal, state, and local regulations
Human operators can warn vandals that they are being filmed and authorities are on the way
FACEBOOK’S DRONE - INTERNET FOR ALLIn July 2015, Facebook revealed that it had
completed a full-size version of its solar-powered Aquila drone
Wingspan equivalent to a Boeing 737 jetliner
Beam Internet access to the most remote corners of the world using lasers
Aquila is now ready for testing in the United Kingdom
Designed to circle around in the stratosphere (the layer of Earth's atmosphere located between 6 and 30 miles)
GOOGLE - PROJECT WINGCommercial drone service
Launching in 2017
Teaming up with NASA to avoid FAA bureaucratic red tape
FAA regulations prohibit drone operation for commercial uses; private use is currently allowed
ISSUES / CONSTRAINTSFAA traffic headaches - small sizes hard for radar detection
Governments slow to address lack of regulations
High incentive to steal $1000+ devices
Separate air traffic control needs
Drone registry
Vandals
POTENTIAL BENEFITSDrones could help farmers prioritize where to apply fertilizer
Help large companies monitor their assets and energy infrastructure
Enable emergency response teams to quickly map the extent of damage after natural disasters
Engineering, surveying, and architecture
Film, video, and photography
DISCUSSION QUESTIONSFACT: Drones are happening
How ought this be regulated?
In terms of commercial use, how would this impact our daily lives?
How can drones be used as a life-saving emergency response resource?
What arising issues do you see with the use of drones?
Would you buy one for personal use, and how might you use it?
MORE THAN JUST PIZZA DELIVERYTransportation of medical supplies, food, and water
Emergency equipment - Drone ambulance?
Disaster management
Law Enforcement
Weather monitoring
Agriculture monitoring

existing infrastructure?
