The Pyramid of Energy SavingsCost reduction is the main goal in any energy management strategy. To reduce costs you need to reduce usage but it takes more than just turning off the lights to make the necessary savings!

How do you achieve sufficient cost reduction that meets the targets and goals set out by your strategy? The Pyramid of Energy Savings

Saving energy costs is an incremental and continuous task but it isn’t an impossible one and it doesn’t require wholesale transformation of your business.

What you need is information and insight from the right energy management sources to ensure significant reduction in direct and indirect energy costs, to improve competitive positioning, and to reduce financial risk.

To make the all-important improvement to the bottom-line, a business must introduce fundamental, lasting change in their approach to energy and its use. With the quick wins made and the necessary measurement and verification systems in place, a long-term project for reducing energy consumption can be implemented with a focus on changing the way the business thinks about and consumes energy on a permanent basis.

Energy visibility

Focus your attention on key energy issues!

If your business can’t tell which operations are using the most energy, you can’t know where energy can be saved.    Energy zoning gives your organisation visibility of  where energy is being used and is a solid foundation of the energy saving pyramid which can save up to 5% by simply measuring and understanding    For example, working with large, multi-site food retailers shows that typically, refrigeration accounts for 40% of electricity use, lighting for 30% and HVAC for 20%. By equipping stores, warehouses, offices and ancillary sites with sub-meters, companies can access more detailed energy consumption information to focus on where to start making energy saving measures.

Meaningful actions

Identify quick wins and take action!

Once you have clear visibility of your energy data, there are a number of actions that can be taken:

• Identify quick wins - Make simple changes to specific usage to have an immediate and sustainable effect on energy bills.

• Monitor asset performance – Track the performance of assets to understand whether maintenance is required, which could be driving up your energy costs.

• Perform detailed analysis on your entire portfolio – Use the data you have to compare stores or sites, regions or specific asset types against each other. This will enable you to spot specific areas in your organisation where improvements can be made.

People engagement

Engage with your whole organisation! People engagement is key to ensuring that achieved savings do not decrease. Small behaviour changes can add up to big savings, especially when multiplied across a large organisation. To promote good energy saving behaviour and maintain acquired savings, involve employees in your energy saving programmes.    For example, give employees insight into their energy consumption, start a small competition with other sites or regions by showing them how they compare, celebrate the achievements of energy champions or teams on a monthly basis…
