DESCRIPTION

Presentation given the Fédération Internationale des Patrouilles de Ski (FIPS) in Big White, Canada, April 2014. Ski patrols are often thought of by resorts as a cost, with only the benefit of sweeping up the incidents that inevitably occur. But what if the ski patrol could produce something of tangible value? By using smartphones to collect data from the incident scene, ski patrollers can cut time and improve patient care. Resorts can benefit from this data through a better understanding of how and why an accident or incident occurs. This is tied to an understanding of the effectiveness of preventative actions. Cost savings can be realised through lower insurance premiums to the resort, and if we have less incidents, we have a better chance of that customer returning to become a lifetime customer.

The Deck of Cards

• Only so much a person can remember, unless you are a card counter - not much data

• Maths nerds believe we have not seen every possible combination of a deal yet

• That’s a lot of data

Page 11: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Surf Life Saving Australia• Has 166,000+ volunteers across 311 surf clubs

• Estimated 100 million beach visits per year via 36,000km of coastline

• Reduced coastal drowning over 7 years from 0.19 in 2004 -> 0.10 in 2011, per 100,000 population

✓ Through the use of mobile apps for recording conditions & accidents

✓ Education on in-bound Qantas flights

SmartphonesWhy are smartphones a potential solution?

Page 13: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Smartphones• Fastest & most prolific piece of technology on the

planet

• Only taken 5 years (the industrial revolution took 40!)

★ 2009 5% of population

★ 2014 22% of population (Business Insider Dec 2013)

• Tablets are spreading faster

Page 14: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Penetration• Norway 67%

• Australia 64%

• Sweden 62%

• USA 56%

• Canada 56%

• SkiPCR - iOS only, packaged with hardware - launched in 2014

Page 18: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Imagine Mt. Powder Snow

• Fictional, but typical resort with 500,000 skier days

• 2.4 injuries / 1000 skier days

• 1,200 accidents

• 20 are career delaying / ending injuries

Page 19: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Typical customer spend• Accommodation $1,200

• Lift pass $600

• Entertainment & food $800

• Flights / transport $300

• Ski rental & Lessons $400

• ~$50,000 over their lifetime (assuming 10 week visits)

Page 20: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Lost Customer

• Costs $50,000 to the industry

• If its a key family member, may stop the whole family skiing

• Could result in kids not converting to lifelong skiers

• Cost to industry $200,000+

Page 21: FIPS 2014 - Using Smartphones in Ski Patrols

Using Smartphones• We could influence ~10% (120) of accidents for the

better

• 5 of the serious injuries may not happen, or recovery is better

• Reduction in insurance premiums

• Customer return increases
