DESCRIPTION
From my Lift12 talk http://liftconference.com/lift12/program/talk/julien-dorra-we-come-internet-lets-build-realspace-events Cyberspace is now the main space where we exchange ideas, work and organize. We live in it every day, every hours of our lives. It is real. It is effective. But what about realspace, physical places? Realspace work and collaboration feel *outdated*. In the office, we don’t know what is going on in the next cubicle. Professional realspace events like conferences are racing to renew their purpose and relevance, competing with incredibly good web talks for attention. And in the middle of this gap, a new kind of event is emerging. Collaborative events where people meet, team up and actually build something new together. Started in the open source community, these creative events are now infecting companies, universities, even museums! They come from the internet. This is the story of how of those events are pushing realspace creativity to a new level.

meetingsare boring
brainstorms fail to innovate
conferences… we can’t bridge the
gap when we go back to work
and students check Facebook
in class for a good reason…
Facebook is more engaging!
⌘ FIt’s easy !
It’s magic !
cyberspace is fun, engaging
most of our time is spent there
we learn, we work,
we meet new people
in cyberspace
usually, the slides would now
try to sell you a social media
tool or a collaboration platform

we want the realspace magic back!
so we create post-web events
let’s sprint together
these guys are world-class devs!
sprint? is that really
what they are doing?
well, it’s more like this zen temple…
a way to focus and fully engage
Tod and Aaron, from Austin, TX
spent a week in Paris,
never saw the eiffel tower
except… from the window
Aaron’s only flickr photo of Paris
Self organizing
Physical location is irrelevant
Workflow is not formated
Developers only!
take sprints, add event design
Franck. simple participant, then Paris
local organizer, now co-director of
Startup weekend non-profit
From the outside, looks like a sprint.
but it’s a local event…
multiple communities are mixed…
and the format is designed.

learning is the key goal, not output practicality
a local event for the local community
exploring the open
question of art and games
games you can play
at the end of the weekend
not just concepts
explicit goal of mixing
skills and talents
Focus on the output

*directly in the museum*
needed to take place in a museum,
designed for this specific museum.
75 participants, and many
more in the community.
wide range of skills and talents
we designed a strict process
with an ambitious goal
more constraints = more creativity
moving things around and
bringing new things in the
museum. *not* simple!
now, the museum is actively
seeking funding for 5 projects
first, the museum team was skeptic…
and there is a new community
of museomixers.
Wide inclusion
Tangible output and impact
Remix of a museum
let’s recap the possibilities
Physical location is irrelevantWorkflow is not formated
Wide inclusion - teachers, curators…Tangible in-situ output
Diversity – musicians, artists…Focus on the output
Local communityDesigned for experiential learning
say again, why do we
need these events?
this *was* the optimum
now *this* is the optimum
learnings from building
post-web events
The sprint principles
apply to many
different domains.
(remember, sprint ≠ rush)
Serial collaborators
are people able to
contribute to any type of event.
Diverse skills and
talents give you stronger,
richer output.
