ACTIVITY: Explain what the role is of each of these departments within a business. What do they do?

The sales department is involved in selling the products and services offered by a business. They will:

Visit and talk to customers

Take orders and negotiate prices

Keep customers informed about new products and services

Keep a record of how much has been sold.

The purchasing department within a business will purchase the products for that business.

They will have to find the right place to buy the products from the manufacturers businesses; then goes to the sales department.

Some organisations are self – sufficient as large automotive corporations buy parts from component manufacturers.

So basically the purchasing department task is to make sure that everything is organised to carry out the business.

The manufacturing department are workers that make the products with materials that they are giving to make a product.

This is a hard job role roll as you got to make sure that the products are made good and test it out to see if it is working like a car, you need to see if it is working such as the radio.

The administration department is that they keep the business altogether.

For example, if a teacher wanted something photocopied and has not got the time to do it then these will do it for them to keep them going so basically it will be an office in a school that does this.

The customer service department is people who work in part of a business dealing with customers that either:

• Have a product that is faulty

• The cost of a product is more then what the shelf said

• Didn’t want the product

• Got the wrong product

• Wants to know how the business works

• Complaining about a product

• The product doesn’t work

The logistics department is one of the main functions within a company as they can see what all of the other departments within a business.

The main targets that they have are divided up into performance and cost related there are:

• High due date reliability

• Short delivery times

• Low inventory level

• High capacity utilization

The finance department make sure that it manages its money and give the government money and back out.

They have to plan, organize, auditing, accounting for controlling and its company finances.

They usually produce the company’s financial statements.

The human resources department is set of individuals who make up for the business of an organization, business sector or an economy.

Terms that can be used for this are:

• Manpower

• Talent

• Labour

• People

The IT support department is people who make sure within a business are:

• Make sure the network is up and running at its best

• Fix computers within the business

• update computers when needed

• They get the materials to fix a computer

• They have to find out where to get the parts to fix a computer.

The marketing department is communicating the value of a product or a service to a customer. Marketing might also be used for selling products that was in the business.

The main target is to sell stuff so the business can earn more money by being in 2 places or more.

The research and development or RnD are a group of people within a business to research different company from company and then another job is to develop new products within the business and knowledge them.

So they research to find out different products but also create new ones in replace this will help earn more money within in the business.

The only main job of the legal department is that it deals with the legal matters within a business.
