ProposalReduce plastic in Graded campus
Intro – why plastic?
Everywhere around us we can see, use and consume plastic
Most foods bought, products, etc.
“It costs US$ 4,000 to recycle 1 ton of plastic bags and you get a product that can be sold on
commodities market for US$ 32. We must stop this
use because recycling is not viable. […]
Every year, 6.4 million tons of plastic are dumped
into the ocean. This is the same as an extension
of 3,200 kilometers of trucks fully loaded with
garbage.” – Ocean Crusaders
Our primary focus on cups and bottles
Stand up for

Just to give a sense of what we mean:
Example Graph
First Proposal
AND stop selling plastic
bottles in the snack bar
How?
Give 1 Graded reusable
aluminum bottle to every
student and faculty
Add on Aluminum is ideal, because it is now known that
reusing plastic bottles may cause severe health problems
First Design Idea
Final Design
First Issues
Bad luck Brian
Water fountains take too
long/unpractical
Graded bottle doesn’t fit
underneath any water
machine at Graded
Took out plastic on hottest
days of São Paulo
First Possible Solution
New Problem
Ideal machine (Brastemp)
Subscription
Graded administration prefers a single, upfront
cost, rather than an ongoing monthly cost
New proposal - research
Option 1 Option 2
1st Step
Bring in 2 units for testing of Option #2
New Issues
Water button doesn’t stop correctly
Water falls on floor and makes a mess
(if not used properly)
Solution Attempt #1
Instructional Video Attempt
Fail – only minor improvement
Reconsider solutions
Bucket underneath
Rug
Cut the water exit
Buy machine Option #1
Buckets aren’t aesthetically pleasing
Modifying machine wasn’t approved
Option #1 wasn’t judged practical
SOLUTION
Graded rugs underneath
Are currently working well
More Problems
Sparkling water
Can’t be sold in snack bar because of plastic bottle
Solution #1
Turn water into sparkling water in seconds
Can be made into soda pop if added with flavor
Solution # 2
Glass bottles for sparkling water
Expensive
Had to have special
disposable place around
school in order to recycle its glass
Small children could
possibly get hurt with these bottles
More problems
Gatorade/Powerade is sold in plastic bottles
Not easily accessible in São Paulo (refills)
Students would need to either have to use
the same bottle for Gatorade and water,
or have a spare bottle
Unpractical
Gatorade still is sold in snack bar until
further changes are implemented
Solution
Disposable Cups Issue When visitors come around, they don’t have the
obligation to always have water bottles
We can’t have disposable plastic cups
Could make available reusable plastic cups
But quantities wouldn’t be high, and we’d have to
wash them constantly
Solutions Water fountains
Don’t need any cups
Eco-friendly disposable cups
Paper used in fabrication come from reforested
wood and is produced with 100% of virgin fibers
Has brownish color because it dispenses whitening
chemicals that are bad for ones health
Progress so far
Remove plastic cups from campus
Bring in practical way of filling in water
Disposable cups for visitors who don’t have bottles?
In progress
Stop selling plastic bottles in snack bar
Gatorade?
Still being sold
Sparkling water?
In progress
Quick activity
3 volunteers
Try your best to compress a plastic bottle into a
small piece
Roughly find area
Now imagine this, times 564 billion
Assuming an average bottle has a 3.5 cm radius
and a height of 20 cm, the space taken up of
ONE bottle could be up to 770 cm3
770 cm3 x 564 billion bottles a year = A lot
434,280,000,000,000 cm3 or 434 TRILLION cm3 of
an extension of plastic used only in bottles per
year
When we say “exterminate
plastic…”
Ok, so now you guys and girls get a rough idea of what NOT to do
On a more serious note…
Repercussion
Initially, ideas might be rejected when presented
Gradually are accepted by our community
Still had some repercussion
Our duty
Make people understand the reasons
Why are we showing all these methods?
So you can apply them and create a better
community that surrounds you
Our goal “Be the change you
want to see in the
world.”
Think globally, act
locally
Contribute your drop
We can do this, but
most importantly, you
can do this
Thank YouThe Graded GIN Plastic Group
