MULTICLIENT STUDY – Botanicals as Ingredients
GIRACT IntroductionGeneva, Switzerland
With diverse agro-climatic zones (16Agro-climatic zones, 10 vegetative zones, 15
biotic provinces, 426biomes), India is one of the mega biodiverse countries in the
world. Around 15000 species of medicinal herbs are found here of which about half
have been characterized in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Only around 30 are
estimated to be exploited in Western allopathic medicine, and an increasing number
of plant-derived products are used across the world in food and food supplements.
Given these global trends, India offers huge opportunities for companies planning to
play a role in the world botanicals market.
However, a variety of problems exist in India including the lack of a robust supply chain that can ensure quality and quantity, a low
level of investment in technology up-gradation for processing, and a lack of concerted effort to produce and market products in line
with global trends and requirements. Multinational corporations as well as home-grown companies are currently addressing these
issues and the prospects seem bright for the herbals/botanical production scenario in India.
The current study attempts to catalogue the state of the Indian herbals/botanicals cultivation/production scene in India. It will provide
inputs on the different herbs that are grown, processed and sold in India and exported. It will attempt to understand the potential for
introduction of new herbs (or popularize existing underutilized herbs) with greater market potential. A mapping of the current stage
of technology is planned along with the list of products and their positioning. Finally a global overview of demand markets will be
provided to evaluate if there is match between production and global demand trends. Giract believes that this study will offer a robust
roadmap for current producers, potential entrants and investors in this area.
