Although no formal Global Compact Network has been established yet in Bangladesh, the GC Office is supporting various efforts by the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and UNDP Bangladesh to raise awareness among the business community.

BEI introduced the Global Compact to key businesses in Bangladesh in March 2002 with UNDP.  Most recently, as follow up to participation in the “First Regional Meeting of Global Compact Focal Points in Asia” held in Bangkok on 7-8 June 2006, BEI organized a conference on the UN Global Compact, with participation from Rahimafrooz Batteries Ltd., ACI Ltd. and Square pharmaceuticals Ltd.  A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Centre at BEI was established in June 2005. The Centre is used as a platform to promote the Global Compact principles and CSR in general.

The Centre will be formally launched in November 2006 at a national level to a larger audience.  Plans are underway to launch a Global Compact Network in early 2007.

In July 2004 GCS convened a national convention on “Excellence in Corporate Citizenship and Global Compact” jointly with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).  Numerous organizations submitted papers / case studies focused on their experiences and good practices on CSR and implementation of the Global Compact principles.

In March 2005 in Jamshedpur, India, the world’s first “Global Compact Regional Conclave in South Asia” took place.  Hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tata Steel, GCS and the UN Global Compact Office, the event brought together more than 200 senior representatives of companies, civil society and the UN to facilitate regional collaboration. The meeting resulted in a number of GC-inspired solutions to contribute to the implementation of the MDGs.
