It is in this context that Global Compact Network India (GCNI) adopted the theme 'Sustainable Development Goals and India: Accelerating Growth through Innovation, Partnership and Human Development' for its 8th National Convention held on 11th March 2013 at ITC Sonar Bangla in Kolkata.

The convention witnessed participation from leading members of Corporate India, academia and Civil Society organizations. The ensuing discussion and deliberations emphasised on using sound collaborations and global partnerships among diverse stakeholders for successfully implementing the post – 2015 development agenda. These partnerships will be characterised by innovative use of ICTs, engagement of the private sector in making these technologies accessible and harnessing the power of networks for sharing knowledge, expertise and resources.

GCNI has renewed its commitment to the MDG 8 by establishing two new Regional Chapters at Chennai and Kolkata. GCNI Chapters promote strong ties between local stakeholders, small business and regional multilateral organizations and serve as robust platforms for sharing information, best practices and collaborating on policy design and implementation. New Chapters extend the outreach efforts of GCNI toward propagating the 'Ten UNGC Principles' to diverse parts of India and creates opportunity for diverse multi lateral organizations and public sector to leverage and expand collaboration with the business community and generate sustainable Public – Private partnership.

In our future endeavours, GCNI as the India network of the UNGC is committed to promoting the post – 2015 development agenda through customised events, capacity building programmes and knowledge – sharing platforms.

The 8th National Convention of the Global Compact Network India commenced on 11th of March 2013 at ITC Sonar in Kolkata. Based on the theme of “Innovation, Partnership and Human Development”, the Convention was inaugurated by Dr. Swaroop Rawal, Educationalist and Social Activist, as Chief Guest and Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, DG and CEO, IICA, as the Guest of Honour.

The convention was preceded by a pre-launch event on the 10th of March 2013 at Palladian Lounge, at the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The pre-launch event witnessed a theme setting speech by Mr. Peter Kenmore, FAO Representative in India on “Accelerating Millennium Developments Goals in India: 2015 and Beyond”. The speech dwelled on the Millennium Development Goals that were achieved by India or could be achieved by 2015. He concluded by asserting that the new UN development goals will be framed in a manner which will engage the governments and heads of the nations across the world to emerge with innovative ideas and out of the box solutions which will increase the momentum and align their respective policies and programmes in achieving these new set of development goals.

The Convention also marked the initiation of the GCNI's Eastern Region local chapter, the 4th GCNI Local Chapter, in Kolkata by the distinguished guests Dr. Rawal and Dr. Chatterjee along with Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Senior Advisor UNGC and Mr. R Mohan Das, Chair of the GCNI National Convention Committee and Director, Personnel and Industrial Relations, Coal India Ltd., and Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director at the GCNI.

Dr. Swaroop Rawal in her speech addressed the audience on what constitutes corporate social responsibility, that it is not solely the work of the government, but it is the duty of each and every member. Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey extended his vote of thanks to the eminent dignitaries and to the members of the audience.

The Convention focused on three sub-themes namely, Innovation as Driver for Sustainable Development which was chaired by Shubranshu Patnaik, Senior Director Deloitte, Partnership: Key to Aggregated Social Benefits chaired by Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, DG and CEO, IICA and Human Development: Approaches to Inclusive Growth, chaired by Prof. Anup Kumar Sinha, IIM Calcutta. The programme was attended by over 250 participants and facilitated the sharing on practices, programmes and other operations that have been carried out by respective participant organizations in the realm of sustainable development.

NAT IONAL EVENTS

GCNI Western Regional Conclave

TCS and GCNI organized a Regional Conclave for the GCNI Western Region on “Greening the Triple Bottom Line: Environmental Responsibility and Sustainable Development” on 14th March, 2013 at the Yantra Park, Thane facility of TCS, Mumbai. The event was co-sponsored by GCNI, TCS, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., Tata Chemicals Ltd. and Excel Industries Ltd and witnessed participation from 130 participants from multilateral organizations.

Dr. Preeti Soni, Advisor, Climate Change at UNDP delivered the keynote speech for the event stressing the importance of conserving the environment and reporting on all such practices for the purpose of knowledge sharing and dissemination. The panel discussions were on the following topics; Environmental Sustainability Methods (Preventive Action) on UNGC Principle 7, and on Corporate Environment Citizenship (Promotive Action) based on

UNGC Principle 8 and 9. Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) - Business Promotes Gender Equality

The CEO Water Mandate, a UNGC initiative was launched in 2007 to promote and facilitate the development, implementation, and disclosure of corporate water sustainability policies and practices. To this effect GCNI , in partnership with HCC and TATA Steel convened a meeting from 5th to 7th March 2013 at SVKM Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. The meeting witnessed an effective participation of 125 representatives including some of the key GCNI member companies such as TATA Steel, ESSAR, Novozymes, HUL, BPCL, TCS, Tata Chemicals, CWC, Partners in Change and CCPL Worldwide along with other companies such as DLF, CIPLA, Dalberg. Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI represented the organization in this significant meeting. The meeting explored critical and complex corporate water management issues and how to advance effective and equitable solutions. The meeting also included a half day field trip on 4th March at the Watershed Organization Trust's Tribal Community, to apprise the participants on water management issues. The multi-stakeholder conference focused on exploring the relevance of the emerging corporate water stewardship paradigm in the “Post-2015 World”and canvassed the range of water-related challenges faced by India, as well as the spectrum of actions the companies have taken in India and elsewhere to mitigate water risks.

Volunteer for a Better India (VFABI Summit)

The Global Compact Network India in partnership with Art of Living (AOL), a GCNI member organised a Youth Summit on 2nd & 3rd February, 2013. GCNI was one of the knowledge partners along with several other UN bodies such as UNICEF, UNODC, UNDP, showcased their participation in the event. A dedicated workshop was organized for 200 young students at the Delhi Technological University, Delhi on 2nd February, 2013. The workshop was eventually followed by a Youth Summit – Volunteer For A Better India which was held on 3rd February, 2013 at Ram Lila Maidan. The event focused on

This event witnessed the presence of wide public participation of more than 100,000 people in New Delhi. Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director GCNI in his deliberation addressed the audience about the various activities undertaken by GCNI over the years which has led itself to emerge as one of the largest voluntary initiative in the country.

India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights

The India CEO Forum is a two year Global Compact Network initiative, chaired by Shri N.R. Narayana Murthy, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Infosys. Under this initiative, two Working Group Level meetings were convened on 30th October, 2012 at Jindal Centre, New Delhi and on 17th December, 2012 at HUL, Mumbai. Around 35 members comprising of representatives from major corporate houses and leading member companies of GCNI such as JSL, Vestas, Mahindra and Mahindra, HUL attended both these meetings. The meetings were an opportunity to deepen sharing, discuss and learn from common challenges pertaining to the domain of human rights. The prime objective was to enable committed business leaders and managers to seek support from each other resulting in enhancement of their own policies, practices and initiatives aligned to international and national developments with respect to human rights issues in the contexts of businesses.

The 3rd Subir Raha Memorial Lecture

2012. Prof J. Phillip, Vice Chairman & President, XIME, Bangalore inaugurated the event which witnessed the presence of 70 leading academicians, experts and representations from leading GCNI member companies. The seminar included presentations by Mr Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI, on the GCNI's history, activities and future plans and by Dr. Catherine Bernard, Founder Director of SERFAC on the role of family towards eradication of poverty and in the context of post 2015 development agenda. The event also witnessed the initiation of the Chennai Chapter, GCNI’s 3rd Local Chapter in India. The local chapter will be headed by Mr. Naresh Kumar Pinisetti, Director, People & Culture AP AC, Vestas.

Instituted in the memory of Late Subir Raha, Former CMD ONGC and Founder, Global Compact Society, The 3rd Subir Raha Memorial Lecture was held on 6th November, 2012, on the theme “Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth in 21st Century: Possibilities and Challenges for India”. This year the lecture was delivered by Dr. Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information, Infrastructure & Innovations. Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, President, GCNI and CMD, ONGC, welcomed the participants and felicitated Dr. Pitroda. Dr. Pitroda in his evocative extempore articulated his thoughts on the concept of sustainable development and reinstated that innovation in IT and Telecom drives every piece of development in contemporary times. The event also witnessed presence of significant dignitaries such as Ms Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative. The event was supported by ONGC and witnessed the attendance of over 250 participants. The lecture invoked igniting questions from the audience and was well covered by reputed local and national media agencies.

Annual General Body Meeting

The 8th Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) was held on 6th November, 2012 at Scope Complex, New Delhi. GCNI President and CMD, ONGC Mr Sudhir Vasudeva chaired the meeting. The AGM considered the Annual report for the year 2011-12 and the audited accounts for the above duration and the financial year 2010-11. The meeting witnessed a well responsive participation of 41 GCNI member organizations who unanimously agreed to the motions of the meeting.

Global Green Inclusive Innovation (G2i2) Summit

Global Compact Network India in partnership with Infosys and CxCatalysts organized a two day summit on 25th & 26th October, 2012 at the Infosys Campus, Bangalore India. The Summit brought forth innovative public private partnerships in the domains of sustainability and green economic growth. The Summit witnessed participation of 100 diverse worldwide organizations and especially drew representation from multilateral GCNI member companies and other organizations from the Indian private and public sectors such as DLF, BPCL, Indian Oil, Tata Consultancy, Tata Steel, NTPC, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Chemicals, and Elcomponics. One of the highlights of the summit was collaboration and commitments from large and small organizations towards building programmes, products and joint technology in the realm of sustainable development and accentuating inclusive growth.

Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation in Corporate Functioning

With support from Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and Lead India, Global Compact Network India and its local chapter in Hyderabad organized a two day Biodiversity Conclave in Hyderabad, was held place from 11th to 12th October, 2012 at Hyderabad. The event witnessed a participation of 200 multi stakeholders representing the private and public sector companies along with other civil society organizations. The conclave emphasised on the perspective, practices, challenges and issues on Biodiversity Conservation and the Corporate Sector, it involved expert-led presentations and panel discussions, with special focus on varied themes such as Energy, Infrastructure Development, Mining Sectors, Case studies and examples of good practice and Focus on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Climate Change, and Sustainability.

Southern Regional Conclave

Based on the theme “Essentiality of a Sustainable Business”, the GCNI's Southern regional conclave was organized on 18th September, 2012, at Hotel Taj Krishna, Hyderabad and was directed to discuss the issues and practices pertaining to businesses on heads of land availability, labour, employment, resource optimization and sustainable environmental practices. Mr. D.R.S. Choudhary Secretary, Ministry of Steel was the Chief Guest of the event and deliberated on the issues pertaining to the importance of sustainable business which is of prime significance for companies both from public and private sector. Mr. N.K Nanda stressed upon the trusteeship model advocated by Mahatma Gandhi and impressed upon the need that corporate sector should act responsibly and add value to both stakeholders and shareholders. Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Senior Advisor, UNGC spoke of the principles of UN Global Compact advocated that sustainability of businesses is possible through their persistence and adherence to ten universally appealing principles of the Global Compact. The conclave focused on three special sessions namely, Social Imperatives- Land Availability, Employment, R&R Plan and other needs of the society; Ecology- Resource Optimization, safe guarding the living environment and bio diversity and Economic - Contributing towards income of society, enterprise and nation. The event witnessed a participation of 200 participants and experts from leading companies, government such as Midhani, Vestas, NMDC, and educational institutes such as XIME.

National Level Dialogue: Refining Strategies and Family Inclusion for Poverty Eradication

SERFAC in partnership with GCNI organized a two day national policy level dialogue on the theme “Refining Strategies and Family Inclusion for

Poverty Eradication in India” from 27th August to 28th August, 2012 and was hosted at The India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi. The meeting was attended by experts from the area of Education, Health, and Social Services along with Government and Corporate and UN representatives. The dialogue focused on developing strategy for empowering the families to contribute towards interventions that prevents the intergenerational transmission of poverty. The two day dialogue concluded with a statement articulating the needs and aspirations of the Indian family with a special emphasis on the National policies. The aim of the document was to embed the 2015 and Post 2015 Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goals respectively and will be disseminated to Governments, UN Systems, corporate community, religious bodies and civil society for future collaborations in the above discourse.

Launch of Children's Rights & Business Principles

Developed by Save the Children, UNICEF and GCNI the “Children's Rights & Business Principles Initiative” was successfully launched simultaneously in three cities on 11th July in Chennai, 1st August in New Delhi and 7th August, 2012 in Mumbai, India. The event marked the unveiling of the book “Children's Rights and Business Principles”. These are the first comprehensive principles to guide companies on the full range of actions to be undertaken to respect child rights within their workplace through strategic social investments, public advocacy and partnerships.

Mr. Thomas Chandy, CEO, Save the Children, India delivered an inaugural address on the perspectives of children's rights and role of businesses. An invigorating presentation on the above theme was showcased by Ms Eija Hietavuo, Corporate Alliance Specialist, UNICEF Geneva. The program marked successful collaboration of significant dignitaries such as Dr. Swarup Rawal, Brand Ambassador UNICEF, Ms Syeda Hamid, Member Planning Commission, Dr. Shanta Sinha, Chairman National Commission of Protection of Child Rights and Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, CMD ONGC & President GCNI.

5th Business Responsibility Summit

In partnership with AIIMA, GCNI organized a summit on the theme “Enabling Responsible Business for a Sustainable Future: Challenges and Opportunities” on 6th & 7th July 2012 in New Delhi. Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, DG & CEO, IICA, Ministry of Corporate Affairs steered this as distinguished Chairman at the Summit. The key Knowledge Partners of the Summit was Ernst & Young. The Summit deliberated on the responsible business practices and creating positive impacts and outlooks. The Summit also entailed deep engagement of the multi stakeholder for channelizing

Caring for Climate Meeting - COP 18

This year the Cop 18 meeting was held on December 5, 2012 at Doha, Qatar and was chaired by Mr. Achim Steiner UNEP Executive Director, UNEP and Ms. Christiana Figueres Executive Secretary UNFCCC. H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations stressed that the technologies are a backbone to solve global climate challenges and encouraged each Caring for Climate company and participants of the UN Global Compact to continue to lead by example and challenge Governments to do more. The Secretary-General reiterated the significance of collaborations and partnerships between United Nations, Governments, business and civil society for effectively combatting the global climate challenge. The meeting drew more than 60 senior representatives from business, civil society, Government, and the UN. The Indian local network was represented by Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, ED, GCNI. The event offered a platform for signatory companies, Governments and the UN to exchange ideas and to discuss a path forward on concrete ways to elevate existing efforts and to inspire more commitments and effective public-private partnerships in support of the UNFCCC agenda.

Asia Oceania Regional Meeting

A joint Exchange Programme and a Regional Meeting of the UNGC Local networks was held on November 18th - 24th 2012 at Colombo, Sri Lanka. Mr Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI represented the India GC Local Network. The prime objective of the programme was to explore how Global Compact Local Networks can further engage their participants in partnerships that contribute to UN goals with a special emphasis on UN-business partnerships. The Local Networks provided feedback and showcased Best Case Practices with an overview of key activities, resources and engagement with the Ten Principles of the UNGC. UN Global Compact Local Networks can play a central role in engaging companies. The meeting emphasised on the significance of Local Networks in engaging companies to adopt responsible business practices in challenging operating environment, eventually generating a positive impact on diverse communities through creation of jobs, supporting social enterprises and stimulating sustainable growth.

In carrying forward the GCNI's sustainability mandate, a knowledge sharing meeting on the theme “Achieving Business Objectives in Harmony with People and Planet”, was held on 28th February at GAIL, with a favourable attendance of 53 members. The programme commenced with the Welcome Address delivered by Mr. Shantanu Roy, General Manager, Corporate Planning, GAIL (INDIA) Limited & Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Senior Advisor, United Nations Global Compact. The interactive session included presentations of two GCN member companies and the diverse initiatives undertaken by the them. The presentation of GAIL focussed on the diverse sustainability initiatives and programmes undertaken by the company which was followed by the presentation of Ms. Jyoti Sethi, Corporate Affairs Department, Tata Teleservices Limited on the various corporate social responsibility initiatives undertaken by the company in the areas of health care, livelihoods, employability, and community development and many more.

GCN I MONTHLY MEET INGS

January 2013

The first GCNI monthly meeting to be hosted outside Delhi was organized at the Institute for Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) on 31st January in Gurgaon and was centred on the theme “Together, We Empower Rural India”. The meeting witnessed the participation of 30 members and was chaired by Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI and Ms. Jane E. Schukoske, CEO, IRRAD. The meeting was facilitated to understand how NGOs and Corporates could come together to further the goal of sustainable rural development. IRRAD presented their work towards developing sustainable model villages. Lt. Gen. Rajinder Singh, CEO DLF Foundation made an insightful presentation about the organizational objectives and vision of DLF Foundation. As highlighted by IRRAD and reiterated by DLF, skill building becomes an important channel for facilitating progressive development of the rural population. Brig. Rajiv Williams, Director CSR, JSL highlighted the company's efforts in facilitating the

On December 26, 2012 Global Compact Network India held its monthly meeting at Thapar House, New Delhi which was co-hosted by CII-ITC Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Development. The theme of the December meeting was “Ethics, Transparency and Accountability: Creating a road map to a sustainable future”. The participants were welcomed by Ms Seema Arora, Executive Director at CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development and Dr Uddesh Kohli, Senior Advisor, United Nations Global Compact. Mr Shikhar Jain, Senior Counsellor at CII-ITC Centre for Excellence for Sustainable Development made a presentation on the various laws and guidelines present in India such as SEBI Clause 55 and international guidelines such as the UNGC principles. Ms Jot Prakash Kaur, Research Associate, GCNI presented on the GCNI's Collective Action Project which is largely focussed on the UNGC principle 10-Anti Corruption. She spoke about the stakeholder consultations that CAP facilitated across the country along with its regional partners. The meeting was concluded by a vote of thanks extended by Mr Deep Chand Papnoi, Programme Coordinator GCNI.

The meeting hosted by All India Management Association (AIMA) on 30th November, 2012, titled “Changing Business Practices for Sustainable Development – Contribution by Business Schools” construed on similar lines of the much wider UNGC initiative - Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). The participants were welcomed by Ms. Rekha Sethi, Director General, All India Management Association (AIMA) and Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Senior Advisor, United Nations Global Compact. Dr. Raj Agrawal, Director, Centre for Management Education, AIMA highlighted that academic activities should incubate multi disciplinary approach and foster sustainable innovations and development within their folds. Prof Rihan Khan Suri showcased an inspiring presentation on the theme of sustainable cities. He stressed on the need to generate more courses to advocate sustainability in various universities and business schools. In the closing session, Dr. S. S Mantha AICTE Chairman, outlined the need of generating innovative ideas by

The monthly meeting based on theme “Sustainable Development through Innovative Business Practices”, convened on 31st October at NTPC Limited. The meeting was initiated with a welcome address by Shri. Ms Bhawana Luthra, Director Programme and Operation, LEAD India in her stimulating presentation emphasised that sustainable development can be achieved only through sound leadership by those equipped with skills through wise training in private sectors. Eventually these leaders will be responsible for facilitating sustainable decision making and will ensure that the present requirements are fulfilled without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The monthly meeting convened on 28th September, 2012 at India International Centre and was based on the theme “Affirmative Action of India Inc through Corporate Social Responsibility”. In her keynote address Prof Inderdeep Chatrath (PhD), Director, Office of Institutional Equity, Duke University, USA enlightened the audience on the international perspective on CSR. The highlight of the meeting was a thought provoking documentary film by NACDOR showcasing the plight of those at the bottom of the pyramid and marginalized sections of society. Mr. Kurt Soderlund, Founding CEO, Safe Water Network, USA in a special address asserted the need of channelizing CSR programmes towards providing safe drinking and clean water especially in the rural areas. After an intriguing discussion, the vote of thanks to the 68 event participants was extended by Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director GCNI.

Rio+20 Summit Experience – a three day event which was held in the capital city Rio De Janeiro, Brazil with over 2,700 participants comprising of business and investor community, civil society, academia, governments and the United Nations. The Rio +20 Summit covered over 120 sessions and was focused on six thematic tracks Energy & Climate, Water & Ecosystems, Agriculture & Food, and Economics & Finance of Sustainable Development, Social Development, and Urbanization & Cities. Mr. Sudhir Kumar Sinha, Corporate Head CSR, CIPLA and Ms. Aparna Khandelwal, Sr. Associate, cKinetics were some of the key participants in the monthly meeting. Business Leaders Workshop - Human Rights in a Business Context: From Why to What to Whom

Under the 2 year Global Compact Network India initiative, India CEO Forum on Business and Human Rights organized the training workshop from the 5th - 7th March, 2013 at Infosys, Bangalore, for business leaders, senior personnel from leading companies of India. The workshop focused on addressing the significance of human rights policies and programme in the context of businesses. Around 27 participants attended the workshop comprising of GCN member companies such as JSL, TCS, HUL, TATA STEEL, Mahindra, Sesa Goa, and others such as ACC. The workshop included hands on exercises, impact assessment analysis, role play and other training exercises which enabled the participant to address the significance of Human Rights and in what manner it can be integrated into Business policies, processes and management systems. One of the major outcomes of the workshop was to aim towards designing and developing a road map in the next 12 -18 months to guide action in the domain of human rights within their companies.

Training Programme on Sustainability: Building Commerce and Communities

A three day long Training Programme on Sustainability was held between the 12th - 15th December 2012, and was hosted at the Amrita Business School, Amrita University, Coimbatore under the auspices of the “International Conference on Sustainable Development and Governance (ICSDG) : Building Commerce and Communities”. Global Compact Network India was one of the significant knowledge partners amongst other national and international organizations such as TERI, Deakin University, and UNGC Australia. The programme was addressed by some of the leading management and sustainability thinkers such as Professor Michael Porter, Professor Nava Subramaniam, Professor Doren Chadee and Professor Craig Deegan. Mr Pooran Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI also delivered a talk on the role of corporate sectors in achieving millennium development goals. Several key GCNI member organizations participated in the event such as Vestas, ESSAR, BPCL, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, IRRAD, Hyderabad Business School, SERFAC, Gandhi Vidya Mandir and Art of Living.

Expert Group Consultation on the Handbook on “Best Practice on Anti - Corruption Incentives and Sanctions” An expert consultation for increasing acceptability and usefulness of the Handbook on 'Best Practice on Anti-Corruption Incentives and Sanctions' was organized from 18th - 21st March 2013 in Berlin, Germany by The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance (HVSG). The handbook showcased the “Best Practices on Anti-Corruption Incentives and Sanctions” project of the Siemens Integrity Initiative. Ms. Shabnam Siddique, Director represented the Collective Action Project (CAP) and GCNI.

5th Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) Conference

The 5th Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) Conference was held from 30th January to 2nd February, 2013 and was hosted in Manila, Philippines. The three day conference was attended by 500 delegates representing 40 countries worldwide, and included sessions on UNCAC, Anti-Money Laundering, Role of Women Parliamentarians, and Parliamentary Ethics and Civil society. GCNI and the Collective Action Project were represented by Ms. Chitra Nair, Research Associates, CAP.

11th Meeting of the UN Global Compact Working Group on the 10th Principle against Corruptions

The UN Global Compact convened the 11th Meeting of its Working Group on the Tenth Principle from 10th - 11th December, 2012 at UN Headquarters, in New York. The two day Working Group meeting marked the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day and was attended by business executives, UN officials, civil society leaders, anti-corruption experts and academicians. The expert dignitaries at the event included H.E. Macharia Kamau, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the UN; Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact, Olav Kjørven, Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP, Samuel DiPiazza, Vice-Chairman Institutional Clients Group; Daniel Kaufmann, President, Revenue Watch; Jermyn Brooks, Chair of Business Advisory Board, Transparency International; Jiang Heng, Vice - President, Beijing New Century Academy on Transnational Corporations; and Keith Darcy, Executive Director, Ethics and Compliance Officers Association. Ms. Shabnam Siddique, Director, CAP, GCNI , represented GCNI and CAP at the meeting.

Book Launch

The Collective Action Project India's first publication, “Raising the Bar through Collective Action: Anti-corruption Efforts in Action in India” was launched by veteran journalist Mr Kuldip Nayar on 4th October, 2012 at PHD House, New Delhi. The book brought together companies from both private and public sector, to share their respective anti-corruption good practices in their business operations. The case studies involving Infosys, Tata Chemicals, Siemens and Tata Steel enumerated their efforts to fulfill the international transparency criteria. GAIL, a Nav Ratna Company, shared its Bill Watch System (BWS) which attempts to make payment to the suppliers within a stipulated time and reduce the supplier-employee interaction which

could help in mitigating the room for bribery. One of the highlights of the book is a case study in which the anti-corruption employee awareness program was instrumental in nabbing the embezzlement of funds in the organization, which had anti-corruption policy in place.

GCNI along with International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) held its first regional stakeholder consultation with the support of Thought Arbitrage Research Institute (TARI) and hosted by XIMB on 13th October, 2012 in Bhubaneswar. The workshop began with welcome address by Fr. P.T. Joseph, SJ, Director of XIMB, and Bhubaneswar. A comprehensive discussion on land acquisition, corruption in the private sector, local challenges in Odisha, increasing poverty and uneven wage scale was organised. Further discussion ensued on committed bureaucracy, bringing down corruption especially in the engineering sector, need for social audit, effective grievance mechanism, key figures from the study, need for fast track justice system, respect for whistleblowers and the importance of responsible auditors to curb corruption.

Mumbai Consultation

GCNI along with International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) held the second regional stakeholder consultation with the support of Thought Arbitrage Research Institute (TARI) and hosted by Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 23rd,October 2012, Mumbai. The consultation revolved around fraud and bribery in India and how collectively private, public sector and civil society can address this issue in the country. The discussion brought about various interesting ideas which could curb corruption in the

On 9th November , 2012, GCNI along with International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) held the third regional stakeholder consultation with the support from Thought Arbitrage Research Institute (TARI) and was hosted by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at Royal Plaza, New Delhi. The consultation aimed at sharing the good practices followed by various private and public sector companies to tackle fraud and bribery, bringing stakeholders together and discuss about whistle blower mechanism in India. The consultation touched upon the introduction of new technology which could serve as a tool in countering corruption such as Unique Identification (UID) cards. There was a detailed discussion on the present whistle blower policies and the changes required for the future. The importance of private member bill was also highlighted in this consultation.

Hyderabad Consultation

The fourth Regional Consultation was held at Hyderabad on 19th November 2012 and was hosted by NMDC. After the three regional consultations in Bhubaneswar, Mumbai and Delhi, emphasis was laid on business practices and anti- corruption policies pertaining to companies based in South India. Loopholes in the existing legal frameworks, the social religious setting, vigilance, top level policy making, valuation of natural resources, empowerment of ordinary stakeholders, role of responsible auditing, absence of political will, long drawn legal battles and rush for profits were discussed at the consultation. Some key recommendations that came forth from the Hyderabad Consultation were enhanced protection for whistleblowers, anonymity of whistleblowers, increased transparency, separate judicial system for white collar frauds for speedy prosecutions, need for oversight by SEBI, comprehensive education for people on guidelines, Collective Action for concerted action against corruption in India, setting the right tone at the top level and tuning individual orientation.
