Thanks to an active construction market, the design of building projects is leading to increased vacancy activity in many states and territories. A busy residential construction market as well as large urban regeneration projects and retail, aged care and healthcare developments have created demand for Architects and Design Engineers in NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Queensland. When they recruit, employers are increasingly using Revit tests in order to assess the skills of shortlisted candidates. Hotspots of demand In terms of skills in demand, Design Architects and Project Architects with BIM/Revit skills at all levels are sought after across the country, particularly in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Town Planners remain in demand in both the private and public sectors, leading to upward pressure on contract rates and permanent salaries. Senior Architects who can assist in running a firm while remaining hands-on when it comes to design are another area of demand. Experienced Architects are also needed in niche areas in New South Wales, including aviation, defence, laboratories and health planning. Retail experienced Architects and Drafters are needed too as international retail brands enter the market, especially in the Eastern states. Revit Technicians are sought for temporary roles to help meet Christmas deadlines. This is due to new players entering the Australian market and winning new and exciting projects, along with other companies opening or growing their interstate operations. Interior Designers with Revit and strong design abilities are another area of need. This demand has grown over the last 9 months and employers want candidates with design sensibility and Revit documentation skills. We’ve seen an increase in Landscape Architectural vacancies in both the private and public sectors. Temporary landscape drafting opportunities are also on offer. The demand for Revit and ArchiCAD remains high. Given current construction trends we are also seeing an ongoing need for architects with multi-unit residential project experience. Interestingly, more developers are looking for architectural professionals to work in-house as their Architect or Design Manager.
