Bangladesh Veg. Seed Industry at a Glance
o The government agency most actively involved in vegetable
seed production is BADC
o Vegetable production has traditionally been seasonal, with 70%
grown in the dry winter months between November and
February, and only about 30% during the rest of the year.
o Recent initiatives from the private sector have emphasized the
development of off season vegetable seed varieties between
March -October
o Transition from Open Pollinated to Hybrid varieties

Current Situation of Vegetable Seed Industry in Bangladesh
o The present requirement of good quality vegetable
seed is around 3,800 Mt.
o 60% requirement is met from domestic production
and imports.
o Vast majority of farmers use their own low quality
seeds; therefore, there is enough scope for the
entrepreneurs to start business with small scale seed
production.

Role of Private Sector in Seed Business
o Vegetable seed production by private sector in Bangladesh started little over a decade back.
o Private sector is now producing seed from their own
varieties, both Open pollinated and Hybrids.
o Demand led varieties or market driven cultivars are
entering into the market relatively more in recent
years.

Scope of the New Entrepreneurs in Vegetable Seed Business in Bangladesh
o The present requirement of good quality vegetable seed is around 3,800 Mt.
o Only 38-40% quality vegetable seeds are available from public and private sectors.
o Seed is a perishable item and vast majority of farmers use their own low quality seeds.
o Vast plain fertile land, enough sunshine throughout the year, 6-distinctly different type of seasons, suitable agro-climatic conditions, relatively cheaper labourer and diverse types of plant genetic resources are available in Bangladesh.

Why women ?1. Promotion of woman entrepreneurs in developing countries is essential to reduce poverty and strengthening their socio-economic status.2. It has been observed in a no. of countries that women can participate as entrepreneurship more efficiently in agriculture if proper facilities are given.4. Seed production of some vegetables is easy, production cost of OP varieties is lower and post harvest operations women friendly. 5. Technology adoption by the women is encouraging & follow up action is very much fruitful.6. Women are good communicator and more conscious about making profit.7. An intelligent woman is an efficient manager and can handle her business more effectively.8. Women are more conscious about nutrition and nutritional security can be ensured by engaging them in the vegetable seed business.9. It is a holistic approach through which rural women can be empowered and poverty can be reduced significantly.

Participation of women in Small scale in Bangladesh Context Bangladesh is basically a democratic country being half of its population is women and most of these women live in the rural areas where agriculture is the mainstay of livelihood. Here the women are basically involved in the agriculture in post harvest operations and in the home garden related activities. From our experience in BRAC we have seen that an intelligent poor woman can be a successful entrepreneur if they are provided with the required facilities viz. credit facilities, necessary input supply and other kind of assistance. From BRAC–AVRDC home garden project, we have seen that rural women can easily operate a vegetable garden in their homestead areas without hampering their family works. Since vegetable seed business is a profitable business and utilizing a small piece of land and small investment a woman can earn a very good profit; therefore, she can become a successful entrepreneur.

Contd. Higher demand of good quality vegetable seed among the homestead level vegetable growers. Private companies are not interested to make business with the OP varieties. She does not require handling critical situations which are usually faced in the seed production of rice or other field crops. Shorter crop duration. Easy cultivation method and post harvest operations. Small quantities of seeds can serve the purpose of the growers. Can open new business opportunities (e.g. processing, requirement of both male & female teasel gourd plants for commercial teasel gourd production). It also offers a scope of fresh vegetable business as a side business (e.g. kang kong, Indian spinach, stem amaranth, spinach, hot pepper, okra etc.) Small storage facility is sufficient to accommodate small quantity of high value seeds . Availability of a good no. of high yielding varieties of different vegetable crops and proven technology.
