TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEM

TPS are a major source of data for other systems, especially MIS and DSS.

TPS are operational-level systems that collect transaction data.

Examples of these are payroll or order processing that track the flow of the daily routine transactions that are necessary to conduct business.

TPS provide data that are required by office systems, KWS, MIS and DSS.

Although these systems may also use other data.

Knowledge work system

• KWS and office systems not only use data from TPS but also from MIS.

• Knowledge work system supports knowledge workers in the creation and integration of new knowledge in the organization.

• Office automation aims to organize the functions in such a way that they do not have to be carried out on a variety of equipment.

• It uses the data from KWS and TPS.

Decision support system

• An MIS that supports several methodologies for accessing and summarizing data.

• DSS not only use data from TPS but also from KWS, office systems.

• Decision Support Systems (DSS) are a class of interactive computerized information systems

• It supports decision-making activities.• It uses communications technologies,

data, documents, knowledge and/or models to successfully complete decision process tasks.

Page 11: interrelationship between information systems

Management information system

• MIS rely heavily on data from TPS but also use data from KWS and office systems.

• Supports structured and semi-structured decisions.

• Uses past & present data• It is an IS that supports planning,

controlling and decision making• Used by managers to monitor the state of

the organization and make routine decisions

Executive support system

• ESS obtain most of their internal data from MIS and DSS.

• In comparison to a DSS an ESS offers more.

•  Combine aggregated data from within the organization with the help of DSS and a wide range of external information

• Used by strategic managers to make policy decisions
