Welcome from your chairman

A very warm welcome to our first full IoD Connect of 2012. I hope you are off to a flying start this year. We have a fantastic line-up of events planned over the coming weeks and months and I would urge you to get involved. Come along, bring your friends and colleagues and let’s make this year even bigger and better than last.

We kick started the year’s activities with an enthralling and entertaining master class with IoD Yorkshire (Humber) board director, Blair Jacobs. Thanks to those who attended. It was great to see you and, I am sure you will agree, Blair’s presentation was engaging, educational and inspiring.

Other events in the pipeline include:

• A question time event sponsored by the ACCA on 08 March at the Hallmark Hotel

• Facilitated by Rob Purfield, a master class with Dragon Den’s hugely successful WedgeWelly on 26 March at Rollits’ offices in Hull

• A ‘women in leadership’ seminar as part of our new ‘business bite’ programme. Thanks to Dr Carole Elliot from the University of Hull for leading proceedings on 30 April

• Our IoD luncheon during Business Week 2012. We are delighted to announce that we will be joined by Rugby World Cup winning coach Clive Woodward at the KC Stadium on Monday 11 June

Please book early as places fill up very quickly. Please contact Pat Coyle for any further information.

I look forward to seeing you at some or all of the events. Meanwhile, please get involved in branch matters and do please let me know if there’s anything you would like us to help you with.

Richard TuplinChairman, IoD East Yorkshire (Humber)

Women in Leadership

This seminar will discuss how, in uncertain times and complex environments, gender diversity in leadership can lead to the creation of more sustainable companies.

Both the media and research studies illustrate women’s success in leadership, claiming the need for more feminine approaches to leadership in complex environments. Yet surveys show there are far more male leaders than female.

The seminar presents the latest ideas on leadership, offering contemporary examples of alternative approaches to leadership practice in a range of sectors by leading academic Dr Carole Elliot from Hull University.

Founded by Maggie Philbin of Tomorrows World fame, TeenTech is a highly interactive event designed to inspire young teenagers and their teachers about the contemporary world of Science, Engineering and Technology. TeenTech gives 300 Y8 students and teachers from across the Humber Sub-Region the opportunity to try their hand at experiments, to handle leading edge technology and, most importantly to spend time with the Engineers, Technologists and Scientists influencing their 21st century lives. It’s a powerful intervention just before students make GCSE subject choices, dispelling gender stereotypes and shifting perceptions of careers teenagers may have considered “difficult”, “geeky” or “boring”.

We are looking for companies who can deliver to students 15 minute or 30 minute hands on sessions that will be repeated during the day. Activities will need to be engaging and informative and include an overview of the company with details of entry points and qualifications. By highlighting different entry levels, including those for apprentices and technicians as well as graduates, we encourage young people of all abilities.

If you have worked with young people before, you’ll know why it is key to have “hands on” activities. They can be simple – British Gas provided five sets of wiring challenges and the Institute of Welding came up with welding in chocolate - or sophisticated - the Institute of Engineering Technology gave students a virtual experience down the Olympic skeleton bobsleigh run – but all were popular and effective.

In 2011 KC, Novartis, IT@Spectrum, HETA, Cobus Communications, BAE Systems, University of Hull, JVC, PES Performance, Communiqué, British Gas, Bishop Burton College, Grimsby Institute of Further Education were some of the companies who supported the TeenTech.

Nearly 40 years ago, an advert appeared in Time Out: “Half-formed theatre company seeks other half” with the caveat that the “other half” must be willing to move to Hull, Mike Bradwell set out to establish one of the most innovative theatre companies in Britain.

Writers and directors such as Alan Plater and Anthony Minghella joined Hull Truck over the course of the next 12 years. John Godber became the key figure in Hull Truck’s next 27 years. Touring his brand of theatre to great acclaim, and encouraging talents such as Richard Bean and Amanda Whittington, the company rose to new heights of both popularity and national importance. The legacy of both Bradwell and Godber, together with all the artists and writers they have fostered, was the foundation of the company’s new home, a brand new theatre, which opened in 2009. Today, under the creative leadership of Andrew Smaje, the company is responding to the opportunity of an increased capacity across two theatre spaces with a fresh artistic vision, encompassing a more diverse programme of work, an extensive community engagement programme and the exciting journey to discover and develop the

next generation of outstanding writers and theatre-makers at Hull Truck. New writing is at the core of Hull Truck’s work. It is truly a writers’ theatre, with a mission to produce the work of living playwrights and to showcase work made by the very best contemporary theatre-makers.

Hull Truck Theatre is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. Board members – including the Chair – hold responsibilities both as Company Directors and Charity Trustees.

Effective governance is vital to our success. Hull Truck is now poised to maximise the potential afforded by a new space and a new artistic programme. We are looking for a confident leader to inspire our board and take our formal governance arrangements to the next level, and in doing so to enhance the theatre’s profile and reputation locally, regionally and nationally.

The role of the Chair is essential for steering and supporting the company in an ever changing, highly complex and demanding environment. And for reminding us that we are right to feel confident and excited about the future.

If you would like to discuss the position informally and confidentially please contact Sarah Jane Dickenson via email at [email protected] and she will make contact with you.

How to Apply:If this is a prospect which interests and excites you, please email a letter of application to [email protected] or write to:
