This course is intended for managers and supervisors in any sector, from any organisation, who have to manage risk and resources within their workplace. The course is not intended to turn delegates into safety experts, but it will provide the knowledge and tools to tackle health & safety issues they are responsible for.

TITLE IOSH Managing Safely DURATION 4 day (6 hours contact time per day) OVERVIEW Managing safely is designed to ensure that health & safety is understood by people at the most important end of the business, the ‘Front Line’. It’s designed to get managers and supervisors up to speed on the practical actions they need to take to handle health and safety in their teams.
Who should attend IOSH Managing Safely is intended for managers & supervisors in any sector, who have responsibility for planning & implementing effective health & safety management within their area of work. It won’t turn delegates into safety experts, but it will give them the knowledge and tools to tackle the health and safety issues they’re responsible for. Importantly, it brings home just why health & safety is such an essential part of their job.
Aims The course aims to provide managers and supervisors with an understanding of how to deal with health & safety issues in the workplace and make them aware of their role and responsibilities under current legislation.

Module 01 – Introducing managing safely Why is it important to manage safely?
What are your responsibilities as a manager?
Look at the moral, legal and financial reasons for managing safely and its integral part in a managers role
Examine how accidents happen and managers accountability
Module 02 – Assessing risks – The meaning of the term ‘Risk’?
What is meant by the term ’Risk Assessment’?
How is risk assessments carried out?
What everyday activities have the potential to cause harm
Look at everyday activities-demonstrate how ‘Hazards’ are identified
Discuss and define the evaluation of the term ‘risk’
Look at examples of likelihood (or Probability) and consequence (or Severity)
How is risk assessment introduced into working practices
What needs to be considered when carrying out a risk assessment
Review simple risk rating systems
Module 03 – Controlling risks Discuss the key points of ‘how do you reduce risk’ and ‘how do you decide which risk control to use’?
Discuss how risk controls are decided and the best method to choose
What is meant by the term ‘reasonably practical’
Module 04 – Understanding your responsibilities Discuss the key points of ‘what does the law require you to do’?
How does the law work?
What are the key points of a H&S management system?
What are your roles and responsibilities?
What is meant by the term ‘reasonably foreseeable’?
Review of the legal system in the UK and how it works
What are the key benefits of introducing a H&S management system into your organisation

Module 05 – Indentifying hazards What are common hazards?
What can you do about common hazards?
Review of common hazards in a workplace
Group exercise to look at common hazards
Module 06 – Investigating accidents and incidents Why investigate accidents and incidents – a look at costs and benefits?
How do accidents and incidents occur?
How do you carry out an investigation?
What is meant by the terms ‘accident’, ‘incident’, and ‘near miss’
What are the main causes of accidents, looking at immediate, underlying and root causes
Group exercise – a review of an accident
Module 07 – Measuring performance Discuss the key points for measuring performance and how to measure performance
What is an audit and understanding the need for auditing
The benefits of setting KPI’s
The limitations of reactive and proactive measuring
Discuss and demonstrate how injury frequency rate is calculated
Module 08 – Protecting our Environment Discuss the key points for what is the impact of industry on the environment, how can you control pollution and waste and
also what are the main elements of an environmental management system?
What is meant by ‘the environment’
Define what is meant by ‘pollution’ and ‘waste’ providing examples
Discuss and demonstrate how businesses can help to reduce pollution and waste
Review the benefits of introducing an environmental management system
Course Assessment, Project and Close
Delegates who attend the course and sucessfully complete the written and practical assessments will be awarded with an IOSH Managing Safely certificate.
45 minute written assessment paper consisting of 22 multi-choice questions
Practical assessment designed to test the delegate’s knowledge of assessing risk and managing safely in their workplace.
Course Material Your Course Instructor will provide delegates with a copy of the course handbook for this program at the beginning of the course. The purpose of the handbook is to provide delegates with the correct information and instructions to understand the importance of managing safety in their workplace.
Additional Information The course structure is based on an open-forum allowing delegates to express their views on policy, procedure, legislation and safety management systems to improve health & safety within their organisation. The course can be run over a four days or over two days per week or one day over four weeks, with given topics for delegates to look at as course work.

Further Information Course numbers The course has been designed to allow up to 14 delegates per course comfortably but can accommodate up to 16 delegates should the need arise. Course customisation The course can be designed to include your company policy and procedures including risk assessment, accident reporting, inspections etc. This encourages delegates to openly review policy and procedure and share knowledge and understanding of practice.
