Introduction (Materials)

Hello, we are the Materials group and we will be explaining what kind of materials are best used to create a solar cooker. As we have discussed in our previous lessons, we can use different things to create heat. A few of the things that we have discovered is compost, metal, plastic and glass. These materials produce heat in a few different ways. For example, compost can produce natural heat by surrounding a metal bucket in a small ditch which water can be placed in to be boiled and purified. These materials are very useful as they are very cheap and easy to get.

Different types of Materials for Solar

Cookers?• Metal • Plastic• Glass (Reflective, tempered)• Insulators

Page 4: Island time materials presentation

Reusable Materials we could use

• Plastic Bottles• Glass Bottles• Compost (Lots in Tibet)

Page 5: Island time materials presentation

What types of materials are better to

use?• Compost would be better because it radiates

natural heat and aluminum foil would also be better as well because it is a very good insulator.

Page 6: Island time materials presentation

What materials can be used for optimum

insulating properties?• Transparent Plastic• Reflective Material (Glass, Plain Aluminum Foil)

Page 7: Island time materials presentation

How do these materials insulate

well?• Aluminum foil is a very good insulator because

when it is wrapped around an item, there are small pockets of trapped air. Trapped air is a very good conductor and convection.

What materials are already available in

Tibet?• Compost• Waste• Sand• Rocks• Grass

Page 9: Island time materials presentation

Are there any other properties to consider

for the materials?• The color black absorbs heat very well so it could

be better to use.

Page 10: Island time materials presentation

How does the density and weight of materials affect how heat is stored and radiated in

the cooker?• Aluminum 2700 per meter square.• 2.7 grams per cm square.• Light metal compared to other metal.

Page 11: Island time materials presentation

If your solar cooker was made from paper and card would it

burn from the solar heat? • It most probably would because paper is very

flammable and it would not be a very useful material to use in a solar cooker.

Our Budget• $50 (HK) for 1 bucket of aluminum. • $6 (HK) for 1 sheet aluminum foil that covers the

top of the aluminum bucket.• $FREE Compost.
