Kiwi’sThis week for
homework we had to research an animal of
our choice.
Picture of a Kiwi
1a.Where in New Zealand is the Kiwi mostly found?
The Kiwi is mostly found in protected reserves and National Parks.
1b.What is the Kiwi’s habitat?
The Haast Brown is found in the rugged mountains behind Haast. The North Island Brown is found in native forests, pockets of bush, pine forests, and scrub country.
1c.How could a Kiwi’s habitat be affected by environmental changes? The Kiwis could go extinct by humans taking their dogs out into Kiwi habitats and the dogs killing them.
The Kiwi’s habitat could also be affected by pollution because if there was a sewerage leak, the Kiwi’s food and drink resources could get poisoned.
1d.What are the Kiwi’s enemies and what threat do they cause?
Ferrets, stoats and weasels
Like cats, they kill 95% of Kiwis and chicks before they are even 6 months old.
Dogs and catsDogs bite and sometimes kill Kiwis. Cats attack little kiwis left alone by their mothers.
1e.How can we help to make sure that Kiwi’s don’t go extinct or endangered? I think that we should make sure that owners put muzzles on their dogs when they go hunting.DOC (Dept of Conservation) should keep setting traps to kill stoats, weasels and ferrets.
