What Leaders Do

Think about leaders as the guiding force in an organization. Leaders create the vision & strategy that allow an organization to thrive. They set the direction and pace, moving the organization forward. Communicating & setting direction is job one for leaders in any organization regardless of size. Motivating others to follow and aligning followers to reach mutual goals gives leaders a different role than that of managers. Leading is Different than Managing The Key Complimentary Role of Managers The role of effective managers is to consider how to organize the complex infrastructure of people, technology and goals, and make them work together efficiently. Through problem solving, effective decision making and daily management of tasks, a manager carries out what the leader has created. Questions to ponder:

• What is the mix of leaders vs. managers in your organization? • Is the balance tipped in one direction? Is that useful to your organization? • How can the mix be improved?
