Introduction

A division of PTE plc

Focus is provision of products and services that will give our clients the opportunity to increase activity amongst children.

Drive to search out new products, programmes and services that will attract children and inspire them to continue to undertake the activity.

The Challenges

Children’s obesity levels are increasingTraditional activities are not engaging the youth of todayParents perceptions of kids levels of activity at odds with the reality “The physical activity levels of children in the UK have been enormously overestimated” (Archives of Disease in Childhood – Sept 2008)130 children aged 6-7 over a one week period observedActual recorded data compared with that from the Health Survey for England supplied by parents

The Challenges

Health Survey for England – 146 minutes of moderate physical activity per day reported by parentsResearch findings – 24 minutes per day!!! Boys were achieving 26 minutes per day and girls 22 minutesHealth Survey indicated 83% of boys and 56% of girls were achieving recommended daily levels of moderate to vigorous exerciseResearch showed just 3% of boys and 3% of girls were achieving this level.

The Solutions

Children are not just small versions of adultsDrivers, motivations are differentHowever the problems are the same!!!The solutions need to recognise the differences and the similarities

Solutions

First priority in providing children’s activity is that it has to be FUN!There needs to be a sustainable learning curve to continually provide new challenges. If initial presentation the activity is deemed by the child to be from their “culture” barriers to access are greatly reduced.Look at motor skills and team skillsHave competition available as an optionAccept that there is no one perfect solution – there needs to varietyMonitor and track activity and improvementTry to think like a child“Your mind is in a game, your body is in a work out”
