    What are Surface Treated Coatings?

The working principleof a Surface TreatedCoating (STC)exists in providing a total package whereby a highly

durable coating is treated inwater resulting in an

    extensivelyprolongedservicelife

    Environmentallysafe:

    biocidefree

    lowVOC

    Typical STC formulation

Main components are vinyl ester resin containing a high volume ofglassplatelets

Impermeable barrier that protects against corrosion and marinefouling

    Extremelydurable

Treatment: special technology of cleaning and conditioning

Conditioning improves the surface characteristics of the coating Cleaning removes any marine fouling in an early stage of development

Conditioning and cleaning may be done simultaneously

Typical cross-sections of STC at different stages: (a) newly applied (b) after conditioning(c) gradual exposition to re-attaching fouling organisms (d) after cleaning/conditioning

    - Towing tank tests carried out with 5m long friction plates- 4 surfaces tested: uncoated, conventional coating, STC newly appliedand conditioned STC

    Frictional resistance characteristics

    - Compared to the conventional paint system, the frictional resistancewas measured to be 7.7% lower for the freshly applied STC and 9.6%lower for the conditioned STC.

    - Full-scale extrapolations point to 4% reduction in fuel savings
