By David NavarroThe chambered nautilus, Nautilus pompilius, is the best-known species of nautilus.The shell, when cut away, reveals a lining of lustrous nacre and displays a nearly perfect equiangular spiral, although it is not a golden spiral. The shell exhibits countershading, being light on the bottom and dark on top. This is to help avoid predators, because when seen from above, it blends in with the darkness of the sea, and when seen from below, it blends in with the light coming from above. Can survive depths to 500 mts, and sails drifting.

The chambered nautilus has more primitive eyes than some other cephalopods; the eye has no lens and thus is comparable to a pinhole camera. The species has about 90 tentacles with no suckers, which is also different from other cephalopods. Chambered nautiluses have a pair of rhinophores, which detect chemicals, and use olfaction and chemotaxis to find their food.The oldest fossils of the species are known from Early Pleistocene.

By David NavarroThe shell that protects it consists of chambers which are visible only the latter two, since they cover the innermost, which are separated by transverse bulkheads. As the animal grows, the last chamber, which is where the organism lives, seems small and has to form a new one.

Nautilus eyes are like a pinhole camera. A simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole – effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.Up to a certain point, the smaller the hole, the sharper the image, but the dimmer the projected image. A common use of the pinhole camera is to capture the movement of the sun over a long period of time. Pinhole cameras are often used for surveillance because they are difficult to detect.Pinhole devices provide safety for the eyes when viewing solar eclipses because the event is observed indirectly, the diminished intensity of the pinhole image being harmless compared with the full glare of the Sun itself.

A survival entrepeneur needs to be able to stare at the sun’s light, without being harmed, and without having the need of lens which can distort his sharp view of his focus.Needs to limit his vision to only what is concerning to his immediate surroundings, and keep surveillance to his food.

By David NavarroUnfortunately for Nautiluses, their shells are attractive to humans and many are killed each year. In aquaria they may live for a long time but they have buoyancy problems (they tend to float at the top) and problems producing new shell (the new shell is discolored, black and malformed). There are no known solutions to these problems. Nautilus eggs have never been found in the wild, no one has ever raised a hatchling to maturity in captivity.

If we could ask to a Nautilus, I am sure it would say:

-You can hunt me, I have no defenses-I might be awful-current depending-have an expendable taste-although I live 20 years, (800 years compared to humans), I need almost the half of my life to achieve my maturity-I have never changed considerably

So what?

-I am here since 500 million years-I have survived even the dinosaurs-Everybody would love to have me at home

And most important

When everyone will be gone, I'll still be here
