Gene McCarty

Senior Vice President of FootwearUnder Armor

Senior VP of Footwear

• With this role, you basically have control of what will be sold at global retailers if the rest of the executive board gives your product the thumbs up. With this role, you have to have great experience with leadership and a wide range of knowledge of the market. Your goal is to always be ready to deliver innovative products. You have to put yourself in the customers place so when you’re creating the product, you’re making it in the form of an instant sell out shoe, so that it’s a high demand product.

Career • After Graduating from Fordham University in 1978 with a B.S. in

marketing, he landed a position with Nike and stayed with them for more than two decades. He had various roles at Nike such as Director of Sales but his major one was Developing/ Retail Marketing of The Jordan Brand.

• After his long time affiliation with Nike, he move to Reebok in 2003 where he was SVP of Global Product and Design/Footwear for over two years.

• In 2006, he landed a Co-President role with The Timberland Company for a little over three years.

• In 2009, McCarthy became the SVP of Footwear at Under Armour in charge of the production of footwear on a global market.

• As of Jan 2008, McCarthy is the Charter Member/ Board of Directors for the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy. In 2013 he also became President of Merrell, overseeing all aspects of the company.

TIPS & ADVICE

• What you can pull from Gene McCarthy is that you should never settle until you’re satisfied. Keep taking opportunities as they come along and build and grow from each one as well. For each role you play with the company you end up with, take all the knowledge you can from the position you had and apply it to the new roles you may encounter in the future. Take risks with confidence and never be a pessimist.

McCarthy

• If we were able to ask McCarthy why he stayed at Nike for so long, we’ll probably get a clearer understanding as to why made the moves he did, leaving Nike and post Nike.

Michael Jordan

• Born: February 17, 1963 • From: Brooklyn, NY; Grew up in Wilmington,

North Carolina. • Career: NBA( Chicago Bulls) 1984-93, 1995-99

won 6 championships with the franchise. • 2001-03 Member of the Washington WizardsNike/Jordan Brand: 1984- Present

Jordan

• Originally, Jordan played college basketball in Converse, however he only wanted to play in the NBA with Adidas. Unfortunately that dream wouldn’t come true, due to Adidas not wanting to matching the money that Nike had offered at the time. There he went with Nike and his Jordan Brand currently generates over $60 million a year.

Biggest Challenge

• The biggest challenge Jordan Brand faces is the constant complaints of the quality of the shoes.

• In 1984 starting with the Air Jordan 1’s the quality of the sneakers were at its best. As the years went by closer towards 2011, the quality was at its worst and was sold at it higher price.

• Due to its Remaster Programing coming 2015, this should silence all quality comments.

Jordan’s Work Schedule

• Unfortunately, Jordan’s exact work hours and traveling aren’t available. Jordan brand brings in over 60 million yearly, so based off that number you can assume that the hours are pretty stuffed and there's a lot of traveling that needs to get done by that executive team in order to keep that number rising.
