MSA offers various Supplied Air Respirators [SAR] that functionindependently of the ambient air.

The self contained breathing apparatus system, including theAirGo and AirMaXX models, is independent of the ambientatmosphere, meaning the user is not tied to a specific location.They offer a wide variety of features and applications. Thesame applies to the short duration breathing apparatusMicroMaXX and BD mini. MSA offers the monitoring systems alpha Personal Networkwith telemetric capabilities and the personal alert safety sys-tem motionSCOUT.

MSA’s chemical oxygen apparatus are ideal for escape/ orworking applications wherever outbreaks of toxic gases, parti-cles or the sudden occurrence of oxygen deficiency are to beexpected.

The Airline system is designed for applications of extendedduration; e.g. in confined spaces. This system connects to anexternal air supply, offering cost effective protection. If youhave to be prepared for situations where sudden oxygen defi-ciency can occur, an MSA compressed air escape device is anoption well worth considering.

MSA’s self-contained breathing apparatus systems aredesigned for long life and low maintenance. To meet everyapplication and budget the long duration SCBAs can be con-figured according to individual requirements.

Based on its decades of experience, MSA has also developedfour SCBA presets, which offer the ideal configuration for themost common applications. The allrounder preset "AirGo pro" is a high quality system for awide range of applications. The preset "AirMaXX" offers opti-mum wearing comfort and technological sophistication forfrequent and demanding use. "eXXtreme" is the optimal choice for flash-over trainings. Foroccasional rescue and escape operations the "AirGo compact"provides superior protection in the budget range.

The patented SingleLine air management system combinesfive features in just one hose. Another enhancement is thealpha Personal Network, a modular personal monitoring andalarm system with telemetric capabilities. The new personal alert safety system motionSCOUT detectsthe cessation of bodily movement and activates an automaticor manual alarm.

Intended mainly for industrial applications of short duration,the SCBA MicroMaXX excels through its low operation weightand several carrying modes that feature variable settings.MSA's wide range of full face masks, demand valves and cylin-ders complete the whole system.

Self-contained MSA chemical oxygen [KO2] breathing appara-tus for use in oxygen deficient atmospheres, as well as hazard-ous atmospheres containing smoke and toxic gases offerprotection for periods of between 15 minutes and 4 hours for avariety of applications ranging from simple assistance and sal-vage to tough fire fighting and rescue missions.

Air-Purifying Respirators[ Ambient-Air-Dependant Respiratory Protection ]

Filtered respiratory protection is dependent on the ambientatmosphere. Local regulations concerning the use of filteringdevices must be observed.

In order to use filtering respirators, the type, properties andcomposition of the hazardous agent in the ambient air mustbe known. The oxygen content in the inhalation air must besufficient [for example according to German regulations: atleast 17 vol %].

When using particle filters, no hazardous gases may bepresent; when using gas filters, no hazardous particles. In caseof doubt, a combined filter must be used.

The most frequently used filters are of the ABEK type, whichprotect against many hazards at the same time, due to thewide range of protection that they provide. Based onEN 14387, these filters have an application range covering thecode letters A, B, E and K. Benefits for the user include: safeselection, no mix-ups, economical procurement, simpler stock-keeping.

High-grade multiple range filters have an even greater sphereof application, e. g. the combined filter 89 ABEK CO NO Hg/Stor 89 A2B2E2K2 Hg/St.

Applications, Markings

The service time of respiratory filters depends on the condi-tions of use. For gas or combined filters that are used againstgases, the end of a filter’s service life can usually be detectedby odour, taste or irritation during inhalation. Some filtershave a specified maximum service time [CO filter cartridges,combined filters 89 Hg/St].

For particle filters or combined filters that are used againstparticles, the end of service time can be detected by anincrease in inhalation resistance.

With combined filters – depending on the predominant pro-tective function – both criteria must be observed. Particle fil-ters must only be used once against radioactive contaminants,spores, bacteria, virus and proteolytic enzymes.

Affinity FLSAffinity FLS is the new generation of foldable disposable respirators from MSA. Its high-perform-ance thin and light filtering media provides a comfortable fit even when used for longer periods.The low-profile design with vertical fold makes it ideal for use under welding hoods or in any tightspot where a respirator must be worn. A pre-shaped nose clip allows for easy contour adjust-ments to achieve a snug fit that prevents exhaled breath from escaping and fogging safetyglasses. A colour coding system ensures easy identification of the protection level and helps theuser to select the right kind of mask for any given application.

Due to the exceptional quality of the filtering media, Affinity FLS masks have a storage life of5 years, from the date of manufacture.

F1E HelmetsThe F1E is a very high performance structural fire helmet, speciallydesigned for large head size firefighters, from 58 to 64 cm.

MO 5006 with 3S-H-A Mask

MO 5006The jet-shaped helmet shell is equipped with a comfortable, soft inner padding, 3-point chinstrapwith locking buckle and anti-strangulation system, a curved face shield and a 4-stud neck curtain.The integration of a bone microphone communication system is possible. The helmet is resistantto damage and penetration from blunt and sharp objects, and protects against chemical aggres-sion, as well as fire and flames.

With the face mask 3S-H-A, the MO 5006 can be enhanced with an integrated mask-helmet pro-tection system that meets international requirements.

The helmet is available for head sizes from 51 to 64 cm in white, black and olive-green.

MO 5001R & MO 5011RThe MO 5001R / MO 5011R is intended for riot control and law enforcement operations with risksof projectiles, gas, smoke, etc. It is compatible with the adaptation of a respiratory mask and canbe either hold with a bulb anti-shock face-shield [MO 5001R] or with a curved one [MO 5011R].

The shell in polycarbonate is moulded by injection. The cradle is comfortable and adjustable byself-gripping parts. The chinstrap, made in leather, has an anti-strangulation system.

Two side holes onto the shell make hearing easier and three back holes bring a better ventilation.

3S-H-A Police Full Face MaskWhenever respiratory protection is required, the 3S-H-A mask can beattached to the MO 5006 without the necessity of removing the helmet.Adjustable rubber straps allow the mask to be connected quickly andsecurely to the helmet.

If the mask is worn without the helmet, a supplementary harness is avail-able which attaches simply and quickly to the mask.

Vautex Elite ETThe chemical protective suit for Emergency Teams [ET] has a combination of elastomer coatedfabric and multilayer film laminate. Vautex Elite ET provides optimal protection against solid, liq-uid and gaseous hazards. It features increased resistance against mechanical stress, flames andlow temperatures [- 60°C], while being flexible and allowing freedom of movement. The largeintegrated lens allows weight reduction in the head section for better wearing comfort. Portable measuring instruments and personal monitors can begrouped into three application areas:

Combustible Gases

There are three elements required to ignite combustible gases:

1. Fuel or flammable gas

2. Heat or a source of ignition

3. Oxygen to support combustion

This is known as the fire triangle. If you remove any one of theelements, combustion will not occur. The percentage of com-bustible gas in the air is also important.

According to the ATEX manufacturer directive 94/9/EC and theuser directive 99/92/EC, any personal monitor for flammablegases, if used as a safety device to reduce the risk of explosion,has to be performance approved.

Any manufacturer seeking ATEX EC certification must demon-strate that their product conforms to EN 61779 [or EN 50054]as a minimum requirement for gaining ATEX approval. All MSAcombustible gas detectors are designed to comply fully withATEX standards and can therefore be used as safety devices.

Oxygen

Instruments to monitor oxygen deficiency or enrichment[measurement in vol.% range], to warn of the danger ofasphyxiation or to monitor the inerting of tanks and contain-ers.

Toxic Gases

In order to recognise and measure toxic substances in theambient air [typically in ppm – parts per million], multi-gasinstruments such as ALTAIR 5 are used.

TITANThis Single-Gas Combustible Detector from MSA has a straightforwardsingle-button operation which prevents any unintentional operation. TheTITAN also has excellent alarm features with four ultra bright alarm LEDs[visible from all sides], sweeping frequency horn, flashing alarm flag onthe display and optional vibrating alarm.

Extremely durable and reliable – it will stand up to the roughest handlingin the toughest environments.

Moreover, the TITAN is equipped with a MSA 20 L sensor. This sensor pro-vides a very high poison tolerance, which considerably increases its serv-ice life. TITAN will take either a NiMH battery pack or an alkaline batterypack, both of which are interchangeable in hazardous areas.

ALTAIR 4The ALTAIR 4 is a reliable and compact multi-gas detector with anextremly durable rubberised housing. It measures O2, H2S, CO and com-bustible gas. The triple alarm system, 24 hour bump test check-mark andcomprehensive datalogging facility come as standard. to their long storage timedetector tubes are most suitable foroccasional measurements. The handling of detector tubes isvery simple and easy.

Detector, Action and Trainer Tubes

Detector, Action, Trainer & Sampling TubesDetector tubes are used to measure hazardous substances in the work-place and in the environment.

Action tubes have a shortened sampling procedure [only 2 strokes] forthe rapid evaluation of dangerous situations, e.g. for fire services [withwarning marks].

Trainer tubes are for demonstration and training. They contain a gaseoustest substance which reacts with detector tubes when connected to themby a hose.

Sampling tubes contain various adsorptive materials as sample carriersfor active sampling of hazardous materials in the air using two compo-nent tubes with sampling and backup layers. The samples are analyzed ina laboratory. MSA recommended laboratory services are available onrequest.

GALAXYThe multifunctional GALAXY provides simple but intelligent testing andcalibration of MSA portable gas detectors, e.g. SOLARIS, SIRIUS, ORION,ALTAIR, ALTAIR PRO, ALTAIR 4 and ALTAIR 5.

This easy-to-use Automated Test Stand offers high performance, from astand-alone unit to a multi-unit system linked to a PC. Since all wiring andtubing is preconnected within each GALAXY Test Stand and optional cyl-inder holder [patent pending], the required workspace is kept to a mini-mum. Once the gas detector is placed in the GALAXY it will be tested,calibrated and/or charged without the touch of a button.

CompressorsMSA offers compressors that charge 200 and 300 bar compressed air cylinders at the same time.The quality of the breathable air meets the specifications of EN 12021.

The range includes models that offer a variety of different features: standard or noise – suppres-sion enclosures for “superquiet” compressors [64 dB], filling panels with up to nine cylinder con-nections, air supply from 160 – 450 l/min., compressors with three pressure settings. Otherfeatures include: fully automatic condensate removal and the easy replacement of filter/dryingcartridges.

An operating hours counter or a supplementary humidity monitor indicate when the filters haveto be replaced. Compressors and charging panels are offered with the option of a separatemounting in accordance with German Standard DIN 14092 [Fire Stations, Respiratory ProtectiveEquipment Workshops].

TecBOS.CommandThe software module TecBOS.Command is an information and communication system for inci-dent managers. It has been especially designed for the management of disaster areas and forextraordinary events of all kinds. The automatic monitoring of deployed resources is supportedthrough the respiratory protection monitoring system, either by telemetric or conventionalmeans.

TecBOS.Command, amongst other functions, provides support for operational control throughthe automated management, documentation and communication of the incident. All processesare automatically recorded and managed in the incident log. The module "emergency simulationtrainer" helps to optimise incident planning and tactics. ATEX ATmospheres EXplosible is French for poten-tially explosive atmospheres. According toATEX Directive 94/9/EC all electronic gasdetectors and personal monitors used inpotentially explosive atmospheres must bemarked and “ATEX”. If the gas detectionsystem [detectors and controller] or per-sonal monitor for flammable gases is used asa safety device to reduce the risk of explo-sion, it has to be performance approved inaddition to the “ATEX” marking.


Performance ApprovalAccording to the ATEX manufacturer direc-tive 94/9/EC and the user directive 99/92/ECany gas detection system [detectors andcontroller] and any personal monitor forflammable gases, if used as safety device toreduce the risk of explosion, has to be per-formance approved. The ATEX EC type certif-icate for the product must then showcompliance at least to EN 61779 [formerlyEN 50054].
