BED BUGS

These pests have made a resurgence within the past couple years. Research shows these

numbers may have risen due to the increase in travel and lack of appropriate precautions

as a result of the low number of occurrences in past years.

What are Bed Bugs?Bed bugs are a type of insect that feed on blood, human blood preferably. They tend to

be small but are large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Adults are brown to

reddish-brown in

color and measure, on average, about 4-5mm in length. They are extremely flat being able

to hide in cracks no wider than a credit card. Eggs are small, white, and oval in shape

and tend

to be in clusters. Females are able to lay several eggs a day.

How do I know if I have Bed bugs?

Most people don't know they have them until they either see them or they are bitten by

them. Other indications are blood smears on sheets, discarded husks of nymphal stages

that have molted, and eggs seen in areas such as fabric seams. Bites can cause red blotches

on the skin that look like a rash. They are nocturnal and will feed at night while the host

is sleeping. Bed bugs will hide in numerous areas inside a home such as mattresses,

cracks/crevices, underside of beds, undisturbed areas near the host (closet, drawers, etc),

couches, upholstered chairs, clothes, etc.

How do I get rid of Bed bugs?The first step to a successful treatment is the inspection. Inspections tell you and us where

how extensive the problem may be and indicate if more than one room needs to be serviced.

Eliminating Bed bugs from the home is a two-part treatment. One part is participation of

the home owner in creating an environment less suitable for them and the other part is

treatment by a pest control professional.

Though there are chemical treatments available for bed bugs, the recommend treatment is

by heat. Heat treatments consist of raising the temperature inside an area to a specified

temperature for a certain amount of time. Bed bugs cannot live in environments above a

certain temperature for an extended period of time.

There is some preparation required before a treatment is performed. We will advise you

in what steps you need to take in order to prepare your home and to optimize treatment.

than one treatment.

How can I prevent Bed bugs from coming into my home?

There is no 100% guaranteed action that can be taken to prevent you from ever getting

bed bugs but there are many things you can do to drastically lower that possibility.

1. Check all luggage before returning home from a trip for bed bugs or eggs.

2. Clean all clothes immediately upon returning home from a trip.

3. Thoroughly inspect all used furniture acquired or bought, this includes mattresses.

4. If you suspect bed bugs, call a professional immediately! Waiting allows numbers to

increase and can potentially lengthen the treatment process.

Stereotypical beliefs indicating bed bugs are found mainly in dirty or cluttered homes have

been around for years. These beliefs are false. Bed bugs can be introduced into a home

in a variety of ways but are not drawn specifically to these conditions. Cluttered homes

do give them more areas to hide but do not increase the chance that they are going to

have a problem.

Reasons a home acquires bed bugs could be but not limited to the following:

Recently purchased used furniture with unknown bed bug problem.

Recently visited an area with bed bugs and brought them home as stowaways. (i.e. hotels,

homes with an already established problem, etc.)

- rental property that had an untreated infestation prior to current residents

- brought to new home when moving.

- bed bugs introduced to home environment in other ways.
