Sustainability
“the level of human consumption and activity, which can continue into the foreseeable future, so that the system that provides goods and services to the humans persists
indefinitely.”
According to the US National Research Council, sustainability is:
The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable development as:
“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.”
For past 150 years most companies were directed by the false
assumptions that planet earth has infinite resources and an infinite
capacity to absorb waste.
What does the future hold for us??
The current global population is at 6.9 billion and it is expected to reach 9.15
billion by the year 2050. With such a speed and current availability of resources,
experts believe only one out of ten people will be able to get food in 2050.
Diminishing forests Earth Observatory, North Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) records suggest that at least 3.5 crore forests are cut down every year. This causes a
huge raise in the prices of fruits, fibre, paper, oil, wax, colour and medicines.
India incurs a loss of around INR 400 billion every year.
Depleting Water Resources More than one billion people do not get proper
drinking water currently. It is estimated that over three billion people will have to manage without
proper drinking water by the year 2050.
Around 60% of water resources in India are expected to dry up by 2025.
In 1950, there every fifty people had one car while in 2011; every twelve people have a car.
This increase has stepped up the pressure on fuel demand.
Over 8.1 crore barrels of crude oil is produced every year across the globe. The production is feared to reduce to 3.1 crore barrels per
year.
Going by the statistics, our future generation may not be able to drive vehicle anymore due to non-availability of fuel.
Pollution The world used 50 lakh tonnes of plastic in 1950 while it has jumped
to 10 crore tonnes of plastic every year.
Do you know that a plastic bag takes 1 million year to perish? Imagine 10 crore tonnes of plastic every year!!!!
This is not enough!!!There is more & more one can speak about and enough has
been spoken too. I have just shared few glimpses with you. It’s time to wake up
and take steps for a better future.
I have taken one small step towards sustainable development. I am sure when we all take one small step, it will only lead to a
GIANT LEAP.

Desire Drives Speed of Change.• Sustainability module is the future of businesses, irrespective of Industry.
• We have to make a choice ,Now!!
• “Preserving resources for future generations”..should be a compulsive thought process.
• Only a Strong intent and desire in the key decision makers of corporate houses, and policy makers in the Government will ensure the sustainability model implementation.

The only way you can manage change is to create it- Peter Drucker
• Cotton is the world's most important non-food agricultural commodity, yet this industry is responsible for the release of US$ 2 billion worth of chemical pesticides each year, of which at least US$ 819 million worth are considered toxic enough to be classified as hazardous by the WHO.
• Cotton accounts for 16% of global insecticide releases: almost 1 kg of pesticide is applied for every hectare under cotton.
• Between 1% and 3% of agricultural workers worldwide suffer from acute pesticide poisoning. A single drop of the pesticide aldicarb, absorbed through the skin, can kill an adult. Aldicarb is commonly used in cotton production.
• Toxic agrochemicals first applied to cotton 50 years ago now pollute the country's land, air, food and drinking water.
• Hazardous cotton pesticides are now known to contaminate rivers.• Organic cotton offers a strong alternative to conventional cotton.
Some Hard facts:

environmental and social perspectives.
