Acquedotto Pugliese

• with its 42,000 km network (6 times the Yangtze river) of drinkingwater mains and drainage pipes,

• 185 water treatment plants,

is among the most impressive hydraulic engineering works in the world.

Introducing Acquedotto

It has 2000 employees and a wholly controlled subsidiary.

It serves over 4 million people

Acquedotto Pugliese covers and manages the entire water cycle: from water sources, to purification, distribution of drinking water, sewerage and treatment of waste waters.

Activities

Acquedotto Pugliese was established in 1902 under a law of the Italian State in order to deliver drinking water to a vast territory that hasneither rivers nor lakes.

The sources of supply are hundreds of kilometres away from the towns.

The main canal, built a hundred years ago, is an extraordinaryachievement. Over 245 kilometres entirely above ground with an average slope of 45 millimetres per kilometre.

The drinking water network comprises five interconnected water schemes that constitute a comprehensive system.

Interconnection makes it possible to transfer water from one scheme to another, according to needs, ensuring high quality standards and no interruption in the delivery of the service.

Characteristics of the system

The sources of water supply are many: springs, reservoirs, wells.

The four purification plants for treating the water from the reservoirshave an overall production capacity of over 12 cubic metres per second.

The water is tested in the 10 laboratories located across the area.

390 thousand chemical and microbiological parameters are monitored every year. The main drinking water indicators are tested in real time through a remote-controlled system with measurementpoints along the network.

The purity of the water is further guaranteed by additionalcomplementary disinfection stations positioned at the main nodes of the network.

Acquedotto Pugliese is engaged in innovative projects for water flow control and management of the system:

• a system that exploits microwaves for spotting leakages;

• devices for remote reading of the meters;

• drones for monitoring the pipes.

The Company has expanded the water supply-chain by taking full control over a leading company in the production of fertilizers for agricultural use.

Production of compost

The aim of this operation is to transforma cost centre – disposal of the sludgesresulting from purification – into a profitable business by producingquality compost.
