DESCRIPTION

The Banff Centre is exploring a new kind of social incubator model that sharpens the focus on more disruptive innovation and the ingredients required to make it happen. We are being assisted in this exploration by Jennie Winhall, Director of Innovation for Participle in the UK as well as various other subject matter experts. As with most things, we are looking for help. We would love any feedback, advice, direction and offers of support as we move through this process. We are trying to be as open as possible and believe that our 75 years of working with the arts and artists provides us with meaningful experience in creating impacts in our communities by advancing new ideas and new approaches.

We invest in ideas and people to make existing institutions better.

However, there is little evidence this investment is really making a

societal difference.

Existing institutions are often misaligned with the needs of those

they serve.

The big challenges we face as a society will need new systems and

new leadership.

• most leadership practice focuses on the individual• most institution building is directed at local issues• leaders are developed to do what the organization

already does (but better)

• most not-for-profit activity reinforces the status quo• new services + innovations too often duplicate old

patterns• there is little incentive to create scalable solutions

If we want to move the needle on business and social issues we

need to be thinking and acting at the level of the system, not the individual or organization.

We need to understand the whole system and where the

leverage points are.

The opportunity is to bring together leaders and organizations to disrupt social systems in Canada that are not aligned with the future, build new ones, and in doing so, create the leadership capacity for ongoing renewal

Don’t develop leaders FOR system-level change.

Develop them THROUGH system-level change.

What is the Opportunity?

We need to act at the level of the system.

Big issues are hard to move and require coordinated effort. There are no silver bullets.

Too many systems are a relic of a past age.

Invest in building capacity for personal, cultural and societal renewal.
