THE COMPETITION

• St. Dorothy’s Senior Students were asked to think of a slogan which raises awareness about our environment. Andrea Cini and Thalia Massa of Form 2.3 came up with the winning Slogan which reads:

REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE,

THINK OF OUR PLANET BEFORE YOU REFUSE!

The Material Bags

• A printing company was approached to produce material bags which will have the School’s Logo together with the winning slogan and logo about the environment printed on them.

• The green consumers at St. Dorothy’s Senior School i.e. the Students, the Staff and the Parents bought these material bags at slightly a higher price in order to raise funds for the Home Economics lab.

• The Home Economics teachers would like to thank everyone for supporting this initiative.

THE COMPOST BIN• Another initiative taken up by

the Home Economics department was to start off a project in making compost.

• A talk to all Form 2 students was held in November 2008 where a representative from WasteServ explained how this project can be carried out.

THE PROCESS

• Kimberly Camilleri (Form 2.1, Celine Caruana (Form 2.1)and Nevena Aleksic (Form 2.2) volunteered to become Green monitors and help out in the process.

• Again the School’s green consumers were asked for their support to bring over to school brown and organic waste from home. A consistent sponsor was without doubt Ms. Therese Galea Curmi.

• In the meantime the Maintenance Staff prepared a base of soil to place the Compost Bin.

THE PROCESS (cont…)

• A layer of twigs and brown leaves were placed at the base of the Compost bin.

• This was followed by layers of organic waste such as egg shells, potato peel and uncooked left over pieces of fruit and vegetables.

• From time to time the stuff inside the bin was stirred to aerate it and a layer of soil and brown waste was added.

• Occasionally a liquid accelerator was also added to accelerate the process of composting.

Recycling Plastic Bottles

• Form 3 & 4 students were asked to get plastic bottles from home.

• The bottles were cut in two parts with the upper part being smaller than the lower part.

• The plastic bottles were filled with soil and succulents were planted in the lower part of the bottle.

• The upper part of the bottle was put in place.

• The plant will obtain moisture from the process of condensation.
