Social Media Updates May 2015

Instagram: Introducing Post Notifications: Get notified when your favourite accounts post a photo or video.

Re-Tweets: Until now, if you wanted to re-tweet a tweet and add your own comment, you could only do so using a tool such as hootsuite. Now you can do this direct from the Twitter website. When you re-tweet, you will now see an option to add a comment:

Periscope:

This month Twitter have introduced Periscope, which allows you to live-stream to Twitter from the Periscope iOS app.

People can comment as you are videoing, for example, to ask questions or to ask you to video a different angle.

Seems like a lot of multi-tasking to me, but it will be interesting to see how this is used going forward.

Direct Message Groups of People:

In Twitter, you can send a direct message to a group of up to 20 people, as long as they are following you. Those people who are included in your direct message can invite their followers.

You can start and participate in group Messages when using twitter.com, Twitter for iPhone or Twitter for Android apps, and TweetDeck.

Twitter Direct Messages

Twitter announced last week that they will start to allow people to send direct messages even if someone isn’t following them.

People can receive direct messages if they switch this feature on.

Will make it easier for brands to deal with complaints in private.

Twitter Home Page:

Twitter will be rolling out a new-style home page where people can read tweets based on topic and news without having to log in.

As usual it’s rolling out in the US first.

Facebook Algorithm changes

Facebook will now give priority on showing your friends news in your timeline and will no longer show eg “Jenny liked this post” etc as often.

This means that businesses will struggle to get as much of their content seen by fans or friends of fans. It enforces the need for ads.

Ads can work very well. Recent well-targeted video ad – just 8p per click
