SOCIETE GENERALE APPROACH TO DIVERSITY

■The Societe Generale Group has chosen to focus upon 2 core Diversity and Inclusion aspects which constitute the SG Group Diversity strategy. Both these are managed at a Global Level by the Group:

Gender Diversity – ensuring that a certain percentage of women will be in Senior Management roles within the Group by 2015

International Diversity – ensuring that a certain percentage of non-French people will be in Senior Management roles within the Group by 2015

The Group has decided to delegate all other diversity and inclusion initiatives such as Family, LGBT, Disabilities, Cultural etc… to the Local/ Regional Level.

To promote a diverse culture, the Group is considering initiatives such as Staff and Managers mandatory training, Roll-out of Group-wide communications and the introduction of KPI to measure Managers’ success in contributing to the Diversity Group’ aims

APPROACH TO DIVERSITY AT SOCIETE GENERALE IN THE UK (1)

At the core of Societe Generale values is our aim to give every individual the opportunity to fulfill their potential, and to do this in an environment where our employees feel comfortable enough to be themselves

With this in mind the UK Senior management, 4 years ago, launched the first UK Diversity Committee for Société Générale

Since its launch in 2008, the Committee has supported hundreds of staff across the organisation through initiatives ranging from mentoring to providing advice and support for parents and careers to holding a series of educational forums and network events

Our success will ensure that we continue to provide a workplace where each of our employees can contribute to their full potential

NETWORKS – THE MULTICULTURAL NETWORK

The newly-established Multicultural Network seeks to promote awareness and understanding of the many different cultures and nationalities represented by employees and clients across Societe Generale.

Its planned activities include events throughout each year to allow employees to come together to mark both national holidays and religious festivals.

The network is also planning a series of workshops where employees can enrich their communication skills by gaining insight into the customs, attitudes and business practices they may encounter in different countries around the world.

By working closely with both internal and external organisations, networks and committees, the Multicultural Network aims to reinforce Societe Generale’s position as an inclusive, supportive and culturally diverse place to work and do business.

NETWORKS – THE UK WOMEN’S NETWORK

The UK Women’s Network was established in early 2009 and has had great success in raising the profile of women at all levels within Societe Generale. The network regularly organises events for members*, some of which are also open to non-members and/or clients

UKWN events have included networking evenings, skills development workshops and regular internal events such as ‘Lunch and Learn’ where female employees get to talk with senior management and learn from the experiences of other women in the company

We are also proud to have launched a UK-wide mentoring program for women. The success of this initial program contributed to the launch in July 2011 of the London Branch’s first firm-wide mentoring initiative across business and support functions, co-sponsored by the UKWN and the HR People & Talent Development team

*All female members of staff are automatically enrolled as members of the UKWN but may opt out on request.

NETWORKS - FAMILY NETWORK

Launched in 2010, the Societe Generale Family Network has focused on providing information, advice and support to employees looking to balance their work commitments with those of family and the home

The Family Network works with leading employee network specialist Employees Matter to offer seminars and other events to help employees address their work/life issues. Topics of interest are chosen by staff and addressed at quarterly speaker-led sessions and through our online information program

The Family Network has also been involved in making family members feel part of the Societe Generale community. Family events include an annual children’s Christmas party and an open day to give teenagers of staff an insight into business careers. The network has also been instrumental in securing Societe Generale’s annual membership to Working Families, a charity committed to helping working parents, careers and their employers find a better balance between responsibilities at home and work

NETWORKS – THE UK SG LGB NETWORK

The LGB (Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual) network was launched in October 2010

It seeks to promote and raise awareness of diversity issues throughout the bank, creating an LGB friendly working environment.

Providing information, guidance and support both to employees and management, the network aims to help Societe Generale towards its goal of becoming one of Stonewall’s Diversity Top 100 Champions.

The committee arranges internal and external events throughout the year to promote Societe Generale within the LGB community and to provide networking opportunities for LGB staff. The network regularly works alongside other organisations and committees, both within the LGB community and the banking sector, to support events and projects that are aligned with its own objectives.

The LGB committee is also available to address any LGB concerns that employees may have and, where appropriate, escalate issues to the Societe Generale UK Diversity Committee.

THE UK SG LGB NETWORK – A JOURNEY…

The UK SG LGB Network started as a small team, but with a big voice. Our programme for 2011 was ambitious and we achieve all our objectives

Most importantly, we have built a strong foundation for LGB diversity and inclusion in a very short period of time. To that end, we believe that this efforts and achievements is worthy of recognition as the Outstanding Employee Network Group of the Year 2011

THE UK SG LGB NETWORK – A JOURNEY…

Against a backdrop of what is still considered “Taboo” in French companies, and by working with two well-recognised organisations on LGB front: Stonewall and Square Peg Media, the LGB network at SG has achieved quite a lot in 16 months.

To change this mindset took a lot of determination but we believe that we have achieved a lot so far.

Firstly we have achieved acceptance. We have broken the psychological barrier that plagued the LGB inclusion and showed everyone that the barrier was never there in the first place.

Secondly, we achieved backing and support from all the Senior Management team, Human Resources and Communication departments as well as the Societe Generale overall Diversity Committee, of which the Chair of the LGB Network is a full member. This support has allowed us to play a bigger role in the promotion of diversity and inclusion at Societe Generale. As a result, Societe Generale is now a key headline sponsor to a number of LGB events (e.g. Stonewall Summer Party, Diversity Careers Show)

And thirdly, we are the envy of other French corporations, which are not traditionally as present as their Anglo-Saxon counterparts on the LGB issue front. SG has always led the way in products and innovation, and now we show that we also lead the way in LGB diversity and inclusion.

THE UK SG LGB NETWORK – A JOURNEY…

The LGB network is led by a member of the Senior Management team at Societe Generale.

The creation of the network has been taken seriously with a strong support from the Diversity Committee as well as the Senior Management at Societe Generale

The LGB network meets every second week to discuss potential activities such as bringing guest speakers to SG to present to SG Staff and raise awareness on LGB issues, preparation of the various diversity events, organisation of internal events and co-operation with other SG Employee networks. In terms of impact, we believe that the creation of the LGB network at Societe Generale, has made a significant impact both internally and externally.

THE UK SG LGB NETWORK – A JOURNEY…

Internal Impact: The main impact internally is one of psychological and a true belief and understanding of

acceptance and inclusion. It doesn’t just say that we are diverse and inclusive; it proves and shows that we really mean it

The network now has over 10 active member pilots the UK SG LGB Network steering committee and over 45 employees are joining the events organised by the network

The UK SG LGB Network Steering Committee members meet twice per month to discuss the various initiatives and projects the LGB network should be engaged in

The members of staff demonstrating their interest in participating in events organised by the LGB network is growing rapidly

Public/External Impact: The LGB diversity programme and inclusion sits at the heart of SG’s motto of “Building

Together” and “Team Spirit”. The advertising campaign no doubt has had a significant impact on the perception of SG as an organisation. Some clients have already praised Societe Generale’s actions on the LGB front.

The most significant impact however is yet to come. From a French Banking Industry perspective, we may have led the way. We may not be the first banking group to promote LGB diversity and acceptance, but we are the first French bank to do so publicly.
