CASE STUDIES

WSR undertook a skills audit of existing staff. TheWSR is fortunate to have over 1300 volunteers, workingacross the entire service, so they are able to recruitpeople with a passion for the industry. When theydo need to recruit externally WSR has a strong brandand is well thought of locally.

Funding training is always a challenge and the WSRtakes advantage of training grants and subsidieswhen they are available. Their training planprioritises needs. They source training fromSomerset Skills & Learning in business skills andmanagement training. Sometimes releasing staff fortraining is difficult, but mostly on the job training anda flexible attitude resolves any issues. Keeping up todate with new technology has been challenging -essential for a 21st century business, but not alwaysin tune with their steam engines.

The WSR works with local agencies e.g. WestSomerset Council, Somerset County Council,Chamber of Commerce and the NationalApprenticeship Service. They also sit on localcommerce and skills boards and network with driversand influencers of the local economy and are part of the local decision making process.

WSR advice to other employers: “Build a rapportwith your training provider. Trust and understandingis key to a successful training partnership. Regularlyreview management and training plans to ensurestaff have the relevant skills to cope with change. They feel trusted and valued that we have investedin their training and they remain loyal to us. Our staff turnover is low.”

The WSR has worked with Somerset Skills & Learning (SS&L) since 2005. WSR alsowork with other training providers. During this time the Railway has grown from alocal business into one of the largest tourist attractions in the South-West. Theyneeded staff to gain new skills across a range of business functions to be able tobetter serve their customer base and manage volunteers and promote their business.Through a combination of formal qualifications, apprenticeships and short coursesthey have developed a dynamic workforce.

The West Somerset Railway (WSR) has steamed ahead withtraining support from SS&L

CASE STUDIES

To ensure they were compliant with CQCrequirements they had to demonstrate staff weresufficiently skilled and trained to deliver packages of care to individuals with learning disabilities. Theywere already aware of the skilled staff working forSomerset Skills & Learning (SS&L) from their previousexperience of working in partnership with them, forthis reason they did not consider approaching anyother organisation to assist them in this area.

SS&L were able to assist their understanding of thenew QCF training framework and were able to helpdevelop and design qualifications which wererelevant to specific grades of staff which relates totheir roles and responsibilities. SS&L were willing toweave their internal policies and procedures intotheir training delivery thereby ensuring they wereable to cement training into practice and evidencereal changes to the delivery of services experiencedby their customers.

SS&L were able to respond flexibly and change thecontent of the training to meet the specific needs ofLD Services. At regular review meetings with SS&LLD Services were able to identify any staff whorequired additional support to continue or completetheir training.

In addition to QCF support, SS&L have been workingwith LD Services to utilise government funding andnon - funding delivery to maximise trainingopportunities and development for their staff.

The following programmes are currently beingdelivered across Somerset or starting soon;

Apprenticeships in Health & Social Care at Levels 2 & 3

Diploma in Health and Social Care at Levels 2, 3 & 5

Shift Leaders Certificate in Care Level 2

LD Services also have a timetable for staff to train inDementia care, and have agreed to fully fund theHigher Apprenticeship in Leadership & Managementat Level 5 for key staff.

LD Services advice to other employers: “I wouldrecommend seeking advice from SS&L as they areable to provide a professional and flexible service. It enabled us to provide training specific to thegrade and role of staff.”

LD Services wanted to introduce the new QCF Diplomas to replace the NVQqualifications. They required skilled support to understand the new qualificationframework.

Somerset County Council’s Learning Disability Team (LD Services) ensure they stay compliant with CQC requirements by using SS&L to train their staff and apprentices

Which people can I employ?

You may already be employing people who are not undergoing any formal training. You may want to take on a school or college leaver, keen to learn from scratch or sometimes your business may benefit from a person who has already gained some knowledge and experience of life or a full time programme. We can work with you to find the best solutions for your business.

“I hope to ‘do business’ with you again as you have been very helpful, professional andsupportive in delivering Manufacturing QCFs, thank you for your dedication.”

How long will the apprenticeship take?

The length of time to complete a (Level 2) Apprenticeship is usually between 12 and 18 months. This depends on the experience of the apprentice and the occupational area undertaken, as well as therequirements of your business and the specific tasks the apprentice will be carrying out. To achieve anAdvanced Apprenticeship (Level 3), which further develops the knowledge and skills obtained at a Level 2, a maximum of 20 months of study in total will be required, depending on the sector undertaken.

Please note that SS&L staff will discuss the projected time span of training with you at the start of theprogramme.

TraineeshipsWhat is a Traineeship?Traineeships can last up to six months and include: Work preparation training; English and maths support ifrequired; A work experience placement of six weeks to five months with an employer; In addition to these basic elements, you and the training provider can add flexible additional content to meet the needs of yourbusiness and the local labour market.

What are the benefits of offering Traineeships?Traineeships have been developed in response to research showing that young people frequently lack theknowledge and experience employers expect in the workplace. Traineeships will help to tackle this problem, while benefiting businesses in the following ways:

l You as an employer can design a high quality Traineeship within your company in partnership with a training provider – one that suits both the needs of your business and the needs of the trainee.

l You can get ahead of the competition by bringing enthusiastic young people with their fresh ideas into your business before they get on to the job ladder.

l Traineeships will allow you to shape the skills and experience of young people from your local community, helping your business to develop a loyal and talented workforce.

l Working with trainees will give established staff members the chance to develop their skills in mentoring and coaching young people.

l If you decide to offer a trainee an Apprenticeship you could be eligible for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1500*

What will my business need to provide?Your company will need to provide a high quality work experience placement for the trainee. Work experience placements should be:

l Substantial and meaningful, providing a real workplace experience.

l A structured opportunity for the young person, matched to their areas of interest and aspiration, where they engage in purposeful work related learning activities rather than observation.

l Long enough to allow for the development and thorough embedding of new skills and behaviours.

Are there any financial costs to offering Traineeships? All training costs are met by Government funding. Employers are not required to pay young people taking part in Traineeships but are encouraged to support trainees with expenses such as meals and travel.

27 million work days were lost last year through injury or illness. Workplace health andsafety training can reduce these numbers. Workplace safety and health legislation includesthe Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and the Health andSafety Act 1974, which together ensure employers are legally obliged to provide theiremployees with adequate health and safety training. Our online certificated health andsafety training for employees provides necessary training for staff to improve safety inthe workplace, and is industry non-specific so the guidance can be adapted to anyworkplace. Training can be completed in the workplace, online and when it best suitsyou and your staff.
