Knows Facebook… I guess? Run a Twitter Account Before,
surely…? Writes a Blog… yes?
A kid. Surely, a kid…?
…Well, start by looking at yourself
1. Is your company ready? 2. What are the objectives of employing a
Social Media Manager?3. How will you measure the success of a
Social Media Manager?4. Who will own and dictate the
measurements of success of a Social Media Manager?
5. Who are you trying to connect with and what are their behaviours?
6. What kind of social presence do you aspire to have?
When you’ve answered THOSE questions, you start to understand the kind of person you want to hire.
It’s Not How Long They’ve Done It – It’s How Much They’ve Done
• Commercial Social Media remains a relatively new phenomenon
• Consider what depth of social media experience suits by the examples of their execution
• Does the work they have done, mirror the objectives of your own social media?
• Seek Examples, methods, and numerical outcomes
Be Careful NOT To…• Assume big brand experience means
best effectiveness • Judge a Social Media Manager purely
by their passion for Social Media • Be blinded by job titles – they can
mean any number of things! • ...don’t hire Ninjas, Gurus, Warriors
and Jedi’s.

• Do they understand how to represent your brand to the target customer audience?
• Do they understand how to measure and communicate success in social media?
• Have they told you a story which mirrors the wishes of your own agenda?
And…
Is your business going to carry them, or do they need to make it happen?
Remember to pick the person who can stand on their own 2 feet.
…It can be a lonely job.
