Corporate Escape
I have made two corporate escapes in ten years. I gave up my company car and sold my flat to travel the world, which led to a reinven4on as a coach and consultant. More recently I leC my role as Director of a successful coaching company in Asia, to set up my own coaching business in the UK. I know what it takes to make big change happen... TRAP 1: NO PAUSE Create a pause for yourself before you dive back in. You have just been through a huge change. LeMng go of organisa4onal life is a libera4ng experience. It can also be exhaus4ng. At the end of every sentence there is a full stop. It is a pause. The same is true of change, it is a chance to pause. As you leave your job, take the opportunity to reflect, celebrate, rest and assimilate the experience you had in corporate life. Now is a good 4me to take a holiday, spend 4me with friends, catch up on your favourite books and even spend some 4me doing nothing!

“Create a pause for yourself
before you dive back in”

“Connect to your purpose and vision in
the early stages of your change.”
~ Tip 2 ~
TRAP 2: BUSY BEE Connect to your purpose and vision in the early stages of your change. In the excitement of your Corporate Escape it is easy to get busy in the details and ac4vi4es of your new life. Whilst you get busy doing you can loose sight of your compass. What is your direc4on? Your true North? Once you have quit your job, I encourage you to re-‐connect to your purpose and set your vision for change. Mapping out where you are against where you want to be is a powerful way of crea4ng sustainable energy and momentum.

“Build a strong, diverse
network of support
around you.”
~ Tip 3 ~
TRAP 3: NETWORK NEGLECT Build a strong, diverse network of support around you. In the corporate world you had teams and departments of experts who could help you. This should be no different now! Whilst you have leC the structure of an organisa4on, you will s4ll require the support structure it offered you. The great news is now you get to build your own and choose who is in it. Joining women’s groups, study groups, special interest groups and so on are quick ways to connect with likeminded people. Set up a group of travelling buddies, select a coach or mentor and of course don’t forget your friends!

“Choose times of the day when you are at your
best to schedule creative
activities.”
~ Tip 4 ~
TRAP 4: SCHEDULE FREEFALL Choose times of day when you are at your best to schedule creative activities. When it comes to 4me management, leaving the externally imposed structure of your job comes with two risks: 1. You have no imposed schedule, meander aimlessly, and find yourself feeling guilty most of the 4me. 2. You have no imposed schedule, don’t delineate ac4vi4es, and find tasks leaking into social and family 4mes. Now you no longer turn up to an office each day it helps to set yourself a rou4ne each week. When are your meal and break 4mes? Where does exercise fit in now? What about your friends and family? Group ac4vi4es that require different energy together in your diary for instance, phone calls, wri4ng, social media, mee4ngs.

“Discomfort is normal.
It means you are doing something
exciting, stick with it!”
~ Tip 5 ~
TRAP 5: JUMP SHIP Discomfort is normal. It means you are doing something exciting – stick with it! You may have a cushion of money that enabled you to make your Corporate Escape. As this cushion starts to reduce fear naturally sets in. This is not the 4me to jump ship and return to your old job! The financial cushion is that – a comfort. Only when you start to feel sufficiently uncomfortable will you be propelled to make things happen. Of course I am not sugges4ng you leave yourself financially vulnerable. Do remember though, that whilst you do not have a regular pay cheque right now, what you do have is the power, freedom and flexibility to choose what next.

“Get focused.
Stay focused.”
~ Tip 6 ~
TRAP 6: UNFOCUSED ENERGY Get focused. Stay focused. It is temp4ng to focus only on the things you love, are good at or really enjoy! Whatever the reason for your Corporate Escape, whether you want to travel, study, set up a business, volunteer or spend more 4me with your children there will be some ac4vi4es ac4vi4es you prefer more than others. Equally others may see you have lots of “spare” 4me and draw you into their agendas. Now is the 4me to get clear on your own priori4es. Know what ac4vi4es are important for you. Get focused and stay focused! Following your heart in times of change

“Celebrate your successes and get help with
your challenges.”
~ Tip 7 ~
TRAP 7: FLYING SOLO Celebrate your successes and get help with your challenges. Making a Corporate Escape is a courageous step. Celebrate! You have made the leap and the journey ahead is an exci4ng one. As with anything in life you can be certain there will be highs and lows to come. There is no need to fly solo… Celebrate your successes with someone who cares. Have someone you trust to support you through the challenges. Following your heart in times of change
