Technology and Me
My personal timeline of educational technology
Michelle Lam
OverviewMy name is Michelle Courtney LamI started Elementary school in 1994 at Kailua
Elementary, right down the street from where I live today.
I graduated in 2006 from Kalaheo High School (also a few blocks from where I currently live)
Immediately after graduating, I went straight to college at University of Hawaii @ Manoa in Fall 2006.
When I finish my degree, I hope to become an elementary teacher who makes a difference in someone’s life.
My Definition of Educational Technology…..
Is technology taught in the classroom for teachers and
students who want to broaden their future and learn the many
different applications of technology that can brighten
one’s future as well as make a difference in the world.
Web sites on Ed Tech History• http://www.csulb.edu/~murdock/histofcs.html
• Here’s a timeline of how computers became apart of the world and how it was brought into schools. It starts from 1780 to 2007. It’s cool, go check it out.
• http://www.isrl.illinois.edu/~chip/projects/timeline/335tl.shtml• United States depends a lot on China and without the
technology there, a lot of things won’t be occurring today. So, I looked for a timeline of how technology was used. The timeline does not only represent technology in the classrooms but also everywhere throughout the country. Take a look for yourself.
• http://www.ericdigests.org/1999-2/teacher.htm• This article focuses on the technology in the classroom
throughout the 1990s. It speaks of change, statistics, problems, etc.
• http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/os/technology/index.html• Ed.gov is a governmental site that helps tries to improve
schools as they support the No Child Left Behind Act.
Elementary technology• I don’t remember using any computers in
the kindergarten level but I do not doubt that our school system had any.
• Computers were just getting introduced.
• The only time I remember using a computer in elementary was when I was in the 4th grade. I would go to this after school program where they would teach you how to type.
• Only PCs existed.• Computers at the time were only found in
the “computer classroom” and I believe that if I were to return back to my elementary, there will be a few computers in selected classrooms all over campus.
High School Technology• Computers were all over campus. • No student brought laptops to school.
And PCs were phenomenal. • There was a class set of laptops for
teachers to reserve for their students.• Many restricted sites on the internet for the
safety of each student• Computers were in almost every
classroom. • Some teachers hardly used the chalkboard/whiteboard and
used projectors, computer power points, etc to teach their lessons.
• Technology was everywhere and if you were not up to date, you were considered weird for not knowing.
• U never want to be kept out of the loop.• Everyone was starting to get cell phones
College Technology• The technology at my high school is very similar
to college. • But the technology in college was more advanced
as well as up to date.• Almost everyone had a laptop/notebook.• I learned how to do power point presentations for
the first time last semester. • I’m still behind on technology and how it works,
but as it progresses, I will keep learning new things.
• More power point lectures.• Almost everyone has an itouch/
iphone
A Vivid Technology Learning Experience• Internet and emails
• For quick and efficient messages, people were using emails instead of the postal services.
• ETEC 442/internet courses• Learning how to
incorporate technology in the classroom.
• Live News Broadcast• Seeing what is
happening on the other side of the country as its happening (9/11 or Obama’s inauguration
A technology I want to use in my classroom• Since I want to be an elementary teacher, I want
to use laptops or desktops in my classroom. Technology is everywhere and is growing as each day goes by. I want my students to never be left out and be able to broaden their minds at the same time. (I just wish I can fundraiser enough money)
• If possible, I want those 8 inch laptops for each student to carry with them wherever they go. Each student should always be kept up to date and give no excuses for homework.
My vision of the classroom
of the future • A robot in every classroom to assist the teacher as well as the students.
• The robot will not only help students learn the things that they need to know in order to succeed.
A challenge for teaching
Challenges that teachers will come across with technology is…….
1. Systems being outdated
2. Classroom materials are not up to date
3. School funding4. Lack of knowledge5. Not enough to teach
all students in an efficient manner
Words of wisdom
• "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got" - NLP adage
