What is Social Media? Social media is ‘media designed to be
disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques’
Blogs, micro-blogging, social networking, video/file sharing, wikis, social bookmarking, community sites and more
1. Launch a dedicated career portal More than just an ‘Employment’ page on your
organisational website! Consider doing this first - because your website
is your core online asset Career portal represents your ‘employer brand’ –
why your organisation is a great place to work Rich and dynamic content – news, video, photos,
case studies, testimonials, staff profiles, FAQs, current job vacancies, contact details
Provide linkages to social media – LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook – and options for connecting

2. Follow industry blogs Join the HR blogger
community – learn, discuss and share info with like-minded people
Respond via comments – adds credibility + search engine optimisation benefit
Get inspiration and ideas for your own blog…
Australian HR Blogs Here are some HR blogs to follow:

3. Research candidates, suppliers & other stakeholders Who has googled themselves? A candidate for a
job? Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social media
sites can be very insightful about individuals. Ethical? Legal? Nobody’s really sure (even the
lawyers) Make sure that your own internet ‘footprint’ is
‘above board’ and educate employees about this too
Be aware that it is often impossible to erase information posted to the internet…think twice before posting those drunken images!
"Kyle Doyle is not going to work, f*** it I'm still trashed. SICKIE WOO!"
4. Monitor what people are saying about your organisation Just as the web is a good place to research
individuals, it’s also a great place to research organisations, including your own.
People are commenting about your organisation on the web!
Where appropriate, you should respond; sometimes best to ignore
Tools for managing your reputation Use Google Alerts – www.google.com/alerts Use Twitter Search -
http://search.twitter.com/ Also take a look at:

5. Establish a presence on LinkedIn Over 8 million users worldwide Things you can do on LinkedIn:
Create a company profile Actively link to people – send a LinkedIn invite after
a meeting, add a link button to your email signature Respond to Q&A and set yourself up as an expert in
your field Let people know if you are recruiting Recommend others and get recommended – good
for your own personal ‘brand’ Ask for introductions to key people via your network Search for candidates for vacancies

6. Start a blog about HR issues Anybody can be a content publisher – not just the
media companies Establish yourself as an ‘authority’; build credibility Write interesting, provocative posts to engage with
readers Write short articles; write regularly – maybe twice a
week Link blog content using plugins, so that content
appears automatically on Twitter, Facebook and career portal
Start at http://www.wordpress.com for free Transition to a domain hosted blog later – ie.
http://www.yourdomain.com/blog
SMS’s Blog
7. Start a Facebook Page Over 250 million users worldwide! Be careful – Facebookers are wary of businesses
encroaching on their leisure time Not appropriate for all businesses, but has some
applications: For existing staff – boost employee morale and loyalty For alumni – get them back to your organisation As a mechanism for maintaining contact with
stakeholders and sharing light-hearted content (jobs?) Successful only if regularly updated and there is two-
way dialogue A question: does your organisation block Facebook?
Why?

8. Start a Twitter feed Micro-blogging; 140 character limit – basically ‘SMS on
the web’ (but also can be done via a mobile device) You follow people, they follow you; your ‘tweets’ are
seen by your followers, you see the ‘tweets’ of people you follow
Many people write off Twitter: who would be interested in this seemingly banal, nebulous information?
Applications: Use it to maintain casual contact with stakeholders Connect to other HR specialists and share information, links to
articles etc Use the viral effect of Twitter to reach candidates for job
vacancies Auto-syndicate a job feed through Twitter

9. Publish video online Video is the biggest growth area on the web as
bandwidth and online storage increases Over 20 hours of video every minute is uploaded to
YouTube Video can be done cheaply with a handheld camcorder Viral impact can bring thousands of visitors to a
website in a short space of time Applications
Video job advertisements Internal training videos Interviews, testimonials, tour of premises video for career
portal Take footage of company events to build employee loyalty and
morale

10. Start an internal wiki Hawaiian term for ‘quick’ A website created by a group of people who
have the ability to contribute and modify content
Often used to create collaborative and community sites – best known site is Wikipedia
Great for internal collaboration – think intranets, knowledge management, document sharing
